My own experience. Using an old sail I would struggle to sail with people who I usually have a good fight with or regularly beat. Put a new sail on and I was back up there. Laser sails are crap the builders, class and sailors all know and accept this. Why the need for testing when every known the sail is crap and the competitive life is short? This is why there is a 'mk2' standard sail (you know the one that LP are selling as a training sail) which has been designed to address the issues but using a cut that is designed to help with the stability of the cloth. Sure at club level you can get away with using a sail that is 12-18 months old before you start to feel disadvantaged but that is still short compared to other classes. In my experience the Laser Radial sail lasts far better than the standard. The Mk2 standard sail is Radial cut, funny that....

At last !
Thanks Paul We used to buy two sails a year - that doesnt happen with most classes. Enough said now - its boring and anyone who races Lasers seriously knows - the sails are of short competitive life. I wont post any more on this topic because if people don't understand it now they never will |

A lot of lasers are sailed at clubs where it's normal practice to either tie your boat to a pontoon or take it out of the water between races - either way, often sails are left flapping in the breeze for considerable periods of time. The Aero has a main halyard so the sail can be lowered. This in itself should help owners care for their sails.
Question - does the Aero behave nicely when tied to a pontoon? Is it easy to raise and lower the sail when moored? If you leave the boat moored with its sail up, does it like to tip over as soon as your back's turned (like my Europe used to and my Streaker does now!)? |

It seems fine on a pontoon at my club. Most any boat will fall over if you leave the rag up, but silly to do that on a short batten sail anyway.

I never left my Laser with the sail flogging in the wind. Always either tipped it over or took the mast our and laid it flat.
It is amazing how many people do leave their sails up though.

I always used to lift my rig out between races when I had my Laser. I guess it was a lot easier to do pre XD kit. Most people I knew could get a competitive year out of one sail for predominantly club racing.

That's good that you can rig the Aero from a pontoon. Should help to make the class attractive to people who sail at clubs where leaving your boat moored between races is normal.
What about the laser or topper trick of jumping past the mast and on to the foredeck as you come up into the wind to moor up? I'm guessing you don't do that in an Aero any more than you'd do that in a Streaker? A Streaker foredeck isn't designed with that in mind! |

Yep, guy with Laser placings like 1 and 3 in division nationally, 1st in two district champs against world champs, and top 25 in the Open Worlds are not serious and they don't understand Lasers like you do..... Edited by Chris 249 - 20 Feb 15 at 8:30pm |
