Sailing Tasar on a gusty lake against GP,s I can vouch for the immediate performance of light boats. Nice gust and we were off only to sail into dead water where the GP,s trundled up, were carried through the dead patch because of stored energy and away. So frustrating.

I don't think that's what's at issue here iitick - it's the statement that light weight makes for closer racing within a Class.

What's made for closer racing in the zero fleet, is that everyone has the same age kit. Everyone is learning at the same rate and bar a few rock stars we are all a similar level and ability.
What really shocks me is how in the zero (can't comment on aero) seems to take crew weight so well. We seem to have a real spread of weight across the fleet all racing very closely. But you find that in big and small local fleets alike. The solo as an example, I had some of the closest and best racing of my life in a solo. Big fleets big broad spectrums of ability, weight, kit age etc. which all are performance levellers.

What I said was more nip and tuck. Thats different to closer. Boats change places more often.

That's exactly what I'd have expected. Let the fleets mature a few years and the spread of ability/equipment and race position will look like any other mature club fleet regardless of hull weight.

What's the difference Simon? I would describe nip and tuck as close.

A close shave is not the same as a nip n' tuck according to my cosmetic surgery mate...

Lets start this again. What we are seeing is that catching a wave or gust that the boat next to you cannot creates a big speed differential instantly and thus a big gain - more so than in a laser. This mean boats are swapping positions more because of the enhanced responsiveness. in a group of average club sailors with similar abilities and fitness, more position changes means more 'nip and tuck' racing and its good fun.
Perhaps its easier to look at it the other way round. Same group sailing wayfarers. Once the start and first beat is dealt with, significant place swapping is only going to happen by making a tactical call or mistake - tide, overstepping mark, wind better on the other side, covering their spinnaker etc. This is because boat speed is always going to be pretty similar. Or take it to a bigger extreme folk boat racing which is almost entirely tactical as speed variance is so small. I would expect dzero's to be seeing similar. No one is saying its some sort of miracle, but to us its noticeable and people on this thread are asking for aero owner feedback so thats all this is doing. If you want to disagree, then fine, but go try racing one and see.

therein lies the flaw in your concept.... most club sailors come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and quite often there's polarisation between the guys who tussle at the front and the rest who mince around at the back- some fall in between if they're having a particularly good or bad day. I don't think I've ever seen a 'group of average club sailors with similar abilities and fitness', but if that is the case at Lymington, then imho that will be the reason for your notably closer, sorry nippier and tucki-er, racing. Not the boat in isolation.
