How can you foresee what will happen in the future without an understanding of what has occurred in the past?
20 years ago, to reference another thread for a moment, the future being written for sailing was one of high speed assy machines, no harder to sail than an Enterprise, dominating the sailing landscape. That, despite the history of sailing showing that the HP boats have always been a minority interest. I'm sure there were articles around saying it was all a load of hype, but I don't recall them. The 20 years thread shows that at the moment none of us have a really clear vision of what sailing will be like in the future. Even the prediction of an assy revolution would be welcome compared to the ideas put forwards on that thread. Best bet for an article about the future would be all about rotomoulding and the boats being used for pay and play. |

do you really think someone on a amateur campaign in a high performance boat is really going to be interested in reading about British Moths at Flea Corner Waterworks SC... or indeed vice versa. The reason there is a limited single source for all things dinghy is that the category is too broad and is best served by more niche communication channels. There are guys on twitter who re-tweet everything with the sailing hashtag. Follow them if you want to catch it all. You could also set up a bloglovin' account and follow newsfeeds from the CAs and news sources that interest you.... a lot of class associations essentially run blog based websites now as blogware is a very easy to deploy CMS. Or run some RSS feeds from the class association ... direct to your inbox. Loads of options, a web 1.0 site is not really needed anymore.

Sounds good to me. Shame our National body doesn't think that way, but then these things are often better done somewhere where criticism is possible... |

I disagree mate, take Bikeradar as a case in point that serves the whole cycling community, Roadies, Cyclocross, MTB (XC, Enduro, DH, etc. etc.) commuters. So why cant sailing. Not only that bt with modern website tech landing pages can be tailored to suit audiences. I am also interestd in reading about new trapeze harness technology, but i don't sail a trap boat. I am also interested in sail cut developments but i sail a SMOD. I think you would be surprisedwhat people are interested in

Exactly! The RYA are the RYA and should be kept out of consumer led websites. Criticism of other gouverning bodies in other sports is the nature of the beast. Besides get the RYA involved and i would be bored sh*tless by all the squad and Olympic talk!

nothing surprises me about what people find interesting on the internet Russ.... just a quick look at the click-bait seemingly intelligent people seem to share or like on FB is an eye opener. As for a sailing site, seriously... would you pony up the investment for it? If not, you, who would? I can't see many online sports publishers like MPORA getting too involved frankly.

I loved reading about the Moth worlds, the techy bits, the stories, but sail on a puddle in the middle of nowhere. I can see, though, that the Moth sailors might not be so interested in a 12 boat open meeting at our club.
This is why open meeting write ups are a bit odd - some would say mine especially. Who do they cater for? If you were there, you know what happened. If you weren't, why would you care? They do act as a way of keeping a class visible - when thinking about a class, the Y&Y page will show me that it an active class if there are lots of postings, but there must be more interesting things for classes to write about than who beat whom to the windward mark in race 3. In fact, very often the previews are more interesting. |

Thats the problems James, i don't think there is enough money in the industry to do it properly. Would I do it, yeah if i had the money and know-how. I think it could be a relative success. The trouble is you would be reliant on word of mouth and google. To spread the word! So again chicken and egg!

As far as I am concerned it is about class or club promotion. I try to avoid to much detail (I can never remember it anyway) so I just give a hazy view. I am interested in other classes though because names of people I have known crop up. It is also interesting watching the progress of the stars.
