I'm quite capable of preparing food for mates, and done enough of it over the years.
I wouldn't have the audacity to charge for it.... which is essentially what these 'social clubs with sailing' offer.
I mean FFS.... Cheesy Chips or last week's Lasagne heated up. If you can't run a decent bar food menu like some of the larger yacht clubs do, then frankly, don't bother- get a van in. |

Hunts galley is run by volunteers, always has been and likely always will be. I always have lunch at the club when I am there because it is reasonable priced and the rolls are good. In the winter there is hot food (jacket pots usually) as well as rolls and the steady supply of tea and coffee.
As for the club itself I believe it has charitable status (we had to change our constitution a number of years ago to get this). HMRC seem happy with what we do so we can't be doing too much wrong!

Turnturtle, given your sailing club experiences, I to can see your point of view however, your experience does not represent the vast majority of clubs in this country. Most clubs do not provide their committee members with any perks. I am certainly not aware of any with preferential parking!
I would say most clubs operate as 'clubs' not businesses, with an operating committee and a small group of trustees should things go pear shaped needing a carve-up. Things like galley and bar are operated by members through the normal duties rosta, with a small number of key individuals appropriately trained in food hygiene. I agree with the outdated views on wives manning the galley, and having experimented with giving the duty to a family name rather than an individual we have now settled on members just picking galley duties using dutyman. Some families like the old ways, but other more modern families do their galley duty as a family activity or the men just front up and do it. Some of our male members are fantastic cooks. As for skilled work completed by members, well if it's their trade, they are qualified and they provide good value then no problem paying them for it. There are plenty of general jobs that can be completed in club work parties with no payments, but specialist activities requiring a qualified trade should I believe be paid for. I guess things like petrol money for doing club errands are perhaps more contentious. If I offered (as I did), to collect some new Oppies for our club from Weymouth, I wouldn't expect to put in a claim for petrol as I'm doing it as a favour to the club. I know others have a different view on this type of expense but then some of us are also happy to buy others a beer at the bar! We are all different ;) Edited by craiggo - 02 Feb 15 at 6:37pm |

Well the current plan is to flood the place with people, we're trying to attract other clubs/activities, the place lays empty all day everyday except sunday mornings and tuesday and thursday evenings.
If there were more going on, then there would be more demand for bar/galley facilities, 1st we need the two to be one so at a push one person can man it, the new layout will feature a hatch that will sell direct to the promenade and promenaders, we're thinking ice cream stuff like that, the bar will then feature sea views and the galley staff can at least watch what's going on on the water. We intend to up the training on saturdays and summer daylight saving time evenings from as soon as is feasible to launch recover in daylight. We have a bike club possibly wanting to meet and take off from our place (we're on a coastal cycle way). We've hooked up with some swimmers and triathlon types, they meet mondays, there's an art class going on as well as fitness and yoga stuff, we're currently debating the access social types will get with tags, at the moment they're only allowed in when the place is open, there's a rowing club nearby their social membership keeps them afloat and they have a full time bar steward, that would be our goal, enough income stream and GP to support someone there full time managing the place, but it's chicken and egg and for sailing alone to support it we just don't have the boat park space so going down the multisport route is the only option.

All seems very good if you're in the right sort of location. The only thing to be wary of is something I hear has happened in a couple of US clubs. The word is that the social and catering side had gone so very well that the nasty wet sailors were getting in the way of the business and were chucked out... |

Rather sad that small personal clubs should be over commercialized, mind you a burger van parked on the boatpark with the smell of hot dogs and onions drifting across the water is tempting. However cakes are the mainstay of our calorie intake and although it is at odds with my previous remarks regarding equality they are generally produced by women...mothers of children mainly. A few years ago we had a junior member who at twelve possessed the body of Brian Blessed (minus the beard). He was not a pleasant child and indeed was particularly irritating and destructive. He did though come with a mother and grandmother who were grateful for the interest we took in him. His maternal carers were cake makers and fantastic cake makers at that. The child lost interest in sailing quite quickly and his loving mother bribed him with cake to stay out. We also lost patience with the recalcitrant youth but however annoying he became we continued with our support for a couple of years in order that his skilled parent kept supplying us with spectacular cakes. they have gone now, just a faded memory, a tale to tell new members. I believe they moved on to another fortunate hobby, lucky hobby.

Vast majority of clubs Paul? Factor in coastal yacht clubs with paid bar staff and caterers and I think you'll find the sport offers quite a few sailing clubs with a more professional outlook to the hospitality side of their operation. I'm not knocking the small, volunteer run places; and I'm certainly no fan of compo culture and the 'elf n safety, but I do wonder if there's a few well meaning individuals who are at quite significant personal risk in the world we now live in.
Food legislation is in place to protect us- and it would be prudent to ensure any catering facility gets the right training, not to mention specialist insurance - regardless of its profit motivations and whether Bill's wife makes the best beef casserole. That incidentally, she brings in once a month in some tupperware from her non-approved domestic kitchen. Who is to be held accountable when Mavis sends Tarquin into an anaphylactic shock at the Oppy open? I mean how was she to know he had allergies and the cooking oil the bacon was fried in was sesame based? I'm not sure 'we didn't know we had to follow this HACCP thing when selling food' cuts it. Not today, not in the EU anyway. Edited by turnturtle - 02 Feb 15 at 8:32pm |
