I think they seem to hit the sweet spot performance wise for experienced sailors- enabling a healthy cross over between boat on boat tactical racing in lighter winds, and all out fun blasting when the breeze is on.

I've only sailed one a handful of times- but I remember the first one vividly - an amazing blast down the River Crouch in good F4-5, and everything on the boat just seemed to work so well.

What makes the so popular?

would say that having one of if not the largest fleet of fireballs in the country at the club it would be due to several reasons and in no particular order (i haven't sailed one for years)

the national circuit attracts top teams

the local circuits are fun

the boats are easy to sail but the level of competition makes them a challenge

they practically point into the wind with the kite up in a gale making them good for RTC handicap racing

Could also say alot for the experience of the crew - the 29er would have had a couple of teens aboard compared to the decades of experience in those fireballs

Of course, i'm only joking.... Was a perhaps ambiguous jibe back at the death to the asymmetric naysayers

As 4 of them were in the top 10 at their Nationals and the 5th is the current world champion its not very suprising...Fireballs are notoriously good in those sort of conditions.

Results are currently after day 1 [race 1 2 3]. Race 4 is the non discardable pursuit. Overall results prob not much different at the top end.
