having lost my sailing watch again, I figure the best answer is just to but the cheapest, carry a spare and treat them as disposable.

Cheapest watch that tells the time and times a start?

I got a bright orange Casio from Argos for about £12. Hard to lose or be picked up accidently by someone else and works just fine.

I've given up on sailing watches, I have a tactic in the boat, but use a Swatch analogue watch with a clear face, my starts have improved no end, because I find it easier to time runs glancing at a second hand.  No faffing around with settings and buttons.  Also get an easier Visual of the time for tides etc.  Finally nont need to swap between a sailing watch and a work watch.  I think most of the sailing watches are Optimum time which I have not found to be very reliable, though to be fair to them they have been replaced on warranty.

+1 for a cheap Casio. Despite owning a smart and expensive watch which was a 21st birthday present, I tend to wear my Casio all the time (unintentional pun as I typed it!).

Cheap Casio - although I'm not at the lowest.  I have one with a nifty vibration alarm, which is really cool in the last minute - you can feel the 'beeps' when you wouldn't be able to hear them.

I just get a cheap waterproof watch from Ebay, usually about £3 delivered and use it in stopwatch mode.

For years I simply looked at the time and added 5 minutes. My starts were no worse than they are now, sadly.

I just use an ordinary watch. A new one every three years or so. My spec is fabric strap, big dial, 50 meters and clear sweep second hand. When the hooters go I just look down and see where the second hand is. Being lazy and crap I am only really interested in the last sector.

Hi
If your eyes struggle with the casio like mine then the Fast time SW3 at £21.50 is a good choice at a reasonable cost.
