Sportives aren't competitive, at least, not according to the law. Any competition is only in the participants heads (although there is certainly a personal achievement of completing the distance or a certain time). It's certainly a personal challenge, but if you compare it to sanctioned cycling events (time trials, road racing) there is a big difference. Sportives are a middle ground between just going out for a ride (cruising) and a true competition (racing) where beginners may feel out of their depth. It allows the participants to practice a lot of the aspects of a proper races, without it being taken seriously as a competition. This provides a very attractive 'in' to the sport for which sailing has not go an equivalent (club racing, dinghy weeks etc are still competitive races, unlike sportives which are not). At HISC i started a sportive racing a couple of years ago. No results, going through the motions of all the aspects you'd need to race with awards for participation. Unfortunately we didn't really push it enough to get it off the ground. However, been very successfully redone as the get racing club and has been a huge success last year. It mixes a lot of the qualities of cycle sportives and hopefully will continue to be successful. I think this is the future for increasing grass roots participation.

I was stupid enough to play hooker, so was more used to being pushed by 2nd rows - straight into the opposition front row, and then face down into the mud. |

I hated my push mower, but love my boats - one feels like hard work, the other like play. Our next door neighbours view gardening like I view sailing, so are very happy pushing a hand mower.

An interesting discussion this. How's this for a tangent. I was looking at lawnmowers the other day, exciting I know, and was stunned to discover it's now hard to find a 17 inch mower that you push yourself. Apparently the masses now demand "self propelled" mowers. Now, if your average mower of lawns cant even be bothered to push a small domestic mower, what hope do we have of getting them to participate in any kind of sport?

Sport England Active People survey, results just out. No change for sailing. Her upstairs is probably sitting a bit more comfortably given the athletics figures. My attendance at the Sailjuice series was an attempt to redress the balance for swimming, apparently to no avail.

I did not get 'lucky' in the housing market but hard work on houses paid off very well.

1. What? House prices aren't rising now? Give me a break. 2. Hope your pensions advisor took all your pensions investments out of Russia before they shot down a airliner. 3. I think you mean to say - 'not everyone GETS lucky in the housing market'. Frankly that is a oxymoronic statement, given your predication of your comments. So therefor you are just a TROLL. |
