They are still competitive at that level which is why plus there are a lot of them about. I am sure there will be a 'class' for them as well as battling for overall positions.

We don't really have anything similar in sailing. OK the CVDRA does try to get older boats out and has number for the various 'updates' but it is more of a niche than mainstream really and there are strict criteria.

What ever it is, it would be good not to have to spend so much time on my knees for the next twenty years, if I can design that bit away it would be cool.

The solo will finally realise that keeping that stupid plank of wood on top of the centre board case is a danger to your shins and will get rid of it. Of course the class will still be going with a bandit py

Laminate the ashes into a new carbon boat and you'll be able to keep the sail number...

I reckon plenty of Sailing Clubs will be around in 20 years and beyond.

Messing about on water is an enduring fascination for humans.

We seem currently to be on a wave on interest in all things healthy and outdoors. Walking, hill and mountain is very popular, triathlon is no longer seen as elite only and we've seen the rise of cycling. I can see no reason for sailing not to be part of that, especially for sailing clubs that are in scenic areas that can offer a whole family day out.

The biggest impediment I see to sailing continuing is that it takes itself more and more seriously and spends too much time looking inwards to see the all the people who simply want to have some fun.

I do think there will be a good deal fewer sailing clubs in a few years time and some of the declining active classes will continue to decline into obscurity. A few will manage to pull a rabbit out the hat and will have a resurgence.

I agree the Merlin will still be with us and strong and unless someone comes up with and alternative so will the Solo. Also local classes - like the broads classes - will still be going strong (assuming the broads are sailable).

Also I agree with the earlier comment that the Olympics will be about entertainment and further detached from the "average" sailor. Not sure about what happens to the Laser, 470 and Finn when they lose Olympic status as they surely will, of the three the 470 would seem to be the one who's demise would be quickest.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

There's the absolute nub.

I believe that, unless we do something radical and soon, the 'missing generation' means club-sailor numbers will plummet when we 1970s sailing boomers finally hang up our wetsuits, at which point I can imagine at least 50% of dinghy clubs will become uneconomic and disappear.

Einstein defined madness is repeatedly doing the same thing but expecting a different outcome.

The point at which the RYA will twig this, and realise they have completely destroyed grass-roots sailing in exchange for a few shiny trinkets (aka olympic medals), is when they find they don't have sufficient kids coming along to be cannon fodder for the next medalist to clamber over on their way to the top. By then it will be too late and the damage may well be irreparable. What a waste.

The only hope is we kick some sense into them before it is too late, although sailing falling out of the accursed olympics might help too. I am not optimistic: not many revolutions are led by near-pensioners

Some dinghy clubs have very active youth sections (to the point of bursting at the seams).

Hunts went through a worrying patch about 7 or 8 years back now but is in much ruder health membership wise now than it was all thanks to having a great training arm. This is what gets the kids out and many parents have given it a go too.
