Which is why you cannot have an SI that allows the use of non-class legal sails in certain classes.

87 CHANGES TO CLASS RULES
The sailing instructions may change a class rule only when the class
rules permit the change, or when written permission of the class
association for the change is displayed on the official notice board.

So if a class is trialing an idea and has given dispensation to a boat, it is possible for them to use it at an event like the BM, if the class (not the sailors) go through the correct procedures, and the event agrees.

In theory if a boat has dispensation to try something then you could argue that is class compliant.

In practice if this is a development that may have a performance advantage then trialling it at anything other than a specific class event could (and has) been seen as bad form (tape drive sails for one, I am sure we all remember that).

But what if say someone decided to graft an Alto rig on a Fireball for example, how would that play out?

Effectively, you then have a new class, and will be issued a handicap based on a process you feel is wrong...

Of course I'd tell them when entering it wasn't a pucker Fireball - Not, so then what? It would fall to protest I guess especially if all the other Balls had their Fur ruffled.. LOL

Didn't a Bosun sail with a whacking great assy a few years back? and get a 2nd place, or something, off the proper handicap?

I think a fireball would be perfect to fix that swinging pole Alto style into the nose and with the carbon Alto rig, not sure on the kite size, never sailed a fireball, they go when it's windy which tends to suggest underpowered by modern 'go fast in a force three' standards.

Have you checked out Tom Gruits QM photos, some Fireball folk in fact not only Fireball, lots of smiles and grins from lots of folk clearly having a blast, made me feel quite envious and a necessity to kick my own ass for not going.

Yes, but It then retired from the race.  Remember the RS800's used the event a a test bed to try the new rules sails prior to being voted in.
