Road & Mountain bikes are the difference between Dinghy Sailing (Roadies) and Windsurfers (ATB's) you might not be old enough to remember but it was windsurfers that gave you mountain bikes to begin with.

fairly sure it was from Halfords actually, but there you go.

And by that analogy you are backing up some quite ingrained views within dinghy sailing, namely that boards (and cats) should never mix on the same course as monohull dinghies... which is rather defeatist, given your own personal ambition (one I like a lot) to see H&SSC racing both boards and dinghies with local PY numbers.

I just think it's great that so many people did sail in conditions that were so tough. Crazy British sailors!

Yes indeed.

As I understand it, these SJ results will not be fed back into the PY system, so there is even less objection to rig-switching than normal.

So the bikes have a series of races over rough and smooth terrain. The majority of people only own one bike, which will be a compromise so they can cope on all surfaces and do better when conditions suit their particlar bike. Someone comes along with a selection of bikes, and chooses which one he will use when he sees the course. Pretty clear who is likely to win.

The point I make is this is NOT first and foremost a 'series'... it was the Bloody Mary.

If someone wants to create a series out of a set of separate events, then fair play to them.  But given the guys who won this year's Bloody Mary used the Fireball, not the 505 they used at Oxford and Draycote, it's fairly clear to me that these separate events are more important than the 'series'.

Win lots of races, but never the series?

Each to their own.

If I could afford to have enough boats to have the perfect sail whatever the conditions, I think I would. As it is, I make do with a laser for now.

Pursuit race results intrinsically do not contribute to PY. I would hope that results for Great Lakes handicap events come back in the returns with all the rest of the results for each club. As long as the rigs are recorded separately then rig switching is unlikely to noticeably affect PY numbers.

I get what you are saying Rupert, but actually the bike analogy isn't a great one really.  As road bikers would not race off road.  Each discipline of cycling has a different bike.  TT, Road, Cyclocross, Track etc.  Even Mountain bikers have different mountain bikes for the different sub disciplines.  Its a very broad sport cycling, and is very, very kit heavy if you want to 'race' in different facets of the sport.

I suspect I'll get flack even locally if we try to mix boards and boats on the same start line, both fleets contain muppets with no regard to rules and there would be carnage.

CATS like Formula Windsurf, have no place on the entire planet so not up for discussion.

But at the level one might expect at a premier event pursuit race or round island jobbie there is no reason race boards cannot compete on I refrain from using the term equally, but on handicap.

Back in the day, the Burnham Icicle used to be the showcase of choice as it fell during the LBS and I was duly despatched there to demonstrate the new Mistral Competition One Design, they took our entry fee ran us off 120 I think it was despite us warning them that 116 would have been more appropriate, needless to say I didn't see any chocolates for my horizon job and boards were never invited back.

Which is a shame, given the welcome extended to foiling moths which are exactly the same thing only faster.
