Classes I wouldn't have fancied my chances in in that weather but which did well: Lark, Scorpion and Enterprise (- first lady too - well done) Classes I would have put money on (and lost): 29er and 420.

I think that out of 60 odd finishers, when it is as lairy as it was at times, allied to cold, some of the more forgiving boats can, and did get round in the top 25% of finishers if they sail a tidy race and don't swim. Deffo suprised not to see 420s up there.

Couple of observations on comments earlier;
Yes, the Alto would have been brilliant at the BM in those conditions - I'd have loved to have been in one with the Yoof. ![]() I understand what you mean about changing classes from the one entered (it's a bit like the "changing down" rig thing on Lasers and Aeros that has been discussed at length on here), but without being able to do this, the Yoof wouldn't have been able to take part; there's no way I wanted to try launching and recovering a Finn at QM in those conditions.... As it was, I still thought he was being a bit overly-adventurous with a full-rig Laser, but 23rd overall and the class win says that he maybe knows better than I... |

I guess for me the not changing classes is a sort of fair play ideal. I understand that people had to in order to be able to sail at all, but in the case of the leading Aero5, I think it has more to do with tactics, as I'm pretty sure Mr Barton could have coped with a 7. But if the rules allow it, then he would be foolish not to, I suppose.

I think all Aero's entered were 9's but only 1 9 launched. Very friendly chap to! Chelmarsh sailor, had some good conversations with him waiting for AP to drop.
The wind had dropped significantly for the race start, but was still at the forum wind level of 'Epic' I think most of the Aero guys that had made the switch to 5 could of carried the 9, they decided not to. To be honest I wouldn't of done the same for a couple of reasons. 1) I had a series to compete in, so the BM result would of been largely irrelevant. 2) With these classes being so new, i think its important to get out there and learn how to sail these boats in extreme conditions. I could of easily decided not to sail, the smart cookies were those that didn't launch. However I like a challenge and i like understanding the boats and my limits. I know what i need to work on now and have a little bit more info around what's slow and fast in a zero in big wind. A number of the Blazes have been doing the same (I'm sure Lasers as well). Which in my opinion is fine if they are not taking the series seriously and are just competing on an event by event basis. Each to everyone's own and all as long as fun was had! I sure did.

Maybe Mr Barton just likes sailing the Aero so much that he decided to sail with the small rig so he starts earlier and sails for longer!
I just think it's great that so many people did sail in conditions that were so tough. Crazy British sailors!

What I think is sad, very sad, is that the Bloody Mary was always a stand alone event- something that has kudos, and remains so in the eyes of most serious UK dinghy sailors I know. It's a one race series, winner takes all... whatever class they turn up with.
The fact that it has been adopted into a series for the clinically insane and dinghy masochists, is largely irrelevant imho. On this basis, I can see absolutely zero reason why there's any debate on whether Steve Cockerel raced his radial as opposed to his Rooster 8.1 or Pete Barton raced an Aero 5 instead of his Moth, or an Aero 9. Following the logic of some here, can they please have a word with the winner.... he entered a 505 at Draycote, but sailed the Fireball at the Bloody Mary. I'm trying to take a positive attitude towards the whole SJ series moniker- I believe it's set out with the best of intentions, and rather representative of a viable dinghy scene for the future where class collaborate, not compete; but those on here moaning about class switching are doing it no favours whatsoever.

Nice to be able to have the resources to enter a different boat for each event, at least Nick Craig sticks to his luddite guns.
I guess its what you're looking for, a pro or amateur circuit, or at the very least it be defined as Pro-Am and entrants get accorded as such rather than the chiselling and posturing that goes on. Edited by iGRF - 12 Jan 15 at 10:04am |
