It's intersting looking at the results. Trapeze boats (not surprisingly) dominated the top 5, but there were very few of them in total. It's not *that* long ago that Laser 4000s were just about the most high profile class around. I find it amazing how quickly that Laser/Topper thing came and went.

But of the top 25 (a little over 10% of the entries) 17 were non-trapeze boats. Of the same 25, 13 had no kite.

Oh, and whilst I'm on, HUGE thanks (again) to QMSC for running the event so well, and the army of volunteers that ensure that the on shore stuff was super-smooth (again).

Try sailing a d-one or a mustom Skiff with a symmetric?
- Asymmetrics have their place on certain types of boat. That said, if I could get regular crew I'd be looking for a Merlin, 505, Osprey or Fireball (all of which have symmetrics)

Well done Russco for getting round, I've heard tales of dislocated shoulders, busted kit and carnage in the boat park, Dave Holman apparently gave an 'interesting' launching display. Testament to those two getting round with I assume the full rig, in the face of lots of Laser radials on a mentally favourable handicap. How come they let that happen, you should run what you enter, not chickesh*t it on the day, if the rules are all about classes, typical dinghy fair play..not.

Why? If that had been the case you would have only had about 10 boats on the water, then everyone would be moaning about how dissappointing the BM was this year and how this must be the demise of dinghy sailing blah! blah! blah! As it was eveyone who took part seemed to have a great sail (apart from Koops tearing his track of his mast) regardless of what they were sailing. From what I can gather, those who sailed in boats different to those entered in the series thus far will not be counting the BM result against the original entry, but will count it as a second entry, which I think is entirely fair. |

On asymettric boats, there doesn't seem to have been any especial shortage of them entering the BM this year. Is it really any surprise that those masochistic enough to want to sail pole kite boats in this era are also masochistic enough to want to finish the race in those conditions?
As for what happened to the 90s, well, this is my evaluation of the main culprits from the rash of sprit kite SMOD boats back then: Laser 5000. The worst boat built in any numbers in the last 50 years Laser 4000. Insanely heavy, weight equalisation went out of fashion Laser 3000. Half assed conversion of a class that hasn't aged well for some reason. ISO. Mediocre. Hull shape all wrong. Nasty rig. Buzz. Mediocre. Hull shape all wrong. Nasty rig. Boss. Probably not quite as bad as the 5 tonner. Spice. More weed than spice. And not in a good way. 49er. Designed by someone who knew what they were doing and has its place 29er. Possibly the best one design of the last 50 years RS200. Not a skiff development in any way, but a nice interpretation of the N12/Merlin line for lightweights RS400. Again nice interpretation of the N12/Merlin line but for mediumweights RS800. Somehow lacking, and again the weight equalisation fad. So actually the good boats with a place have survived, and the not so good ones haven't. Not really that odd is it? What's maybe a bit more surprising is that no-one has really attempted to build a decent modern performance boat, a sort of Fireball/505 for the 21stC, but with the general decline in fast boat sailing maybe that's commercially a sensible call. While this ex forward hand might occasionally sail a pole kite boat for fun and nostalgia, I can't imagine wanting to sail one for serious competition. Edited by JimC - 11 Jan 15 at 4:04pm |

And if they did you b'stards on that sad committee would only penalise the f**k out of them a la Alto and had the Icon had a kite hell it would probably be running of 850. |
