I wish the RYA would spend that money on 'PROMOTING the SPORT' to a national audience, rather than promoting infrastructure improvement via grant aid in the hope that this will promote the sport! Seems to me like they have too many 'friends' in the boating business, if you know what I mean. New blood is needed. Not a transfusion.

This money doesn't come from the RYA it comes from Sport England.

Sourced from the lottery? We have a big sign nailed to the rescue hut door. AN INSPIRED FACILITY. Sport England, apparently we were inspired by the Olympics. I do like the idea of this money being spent of national promotion rather than better showers and improved car park surfacing. That would do more to encourage participation, cure obesity and channel energy into sport rather than crime. Did you know that the next Ben Ainsley talent is a black kid living in Lewisham who has never sat in a boat and never will?

I think that you are being a bit harsh on the RYA, although I am all for a bit of RYA bashing but not on this.
if sailing clubs don't grab the £50k Inspired Facilities grants, someone else will. We used the £50k to lever another £50k of Euro/DEFRA money, and £50k of member's money to revamp our club facilities. None of this would have happened without the Sport England seed money ... And hopefully it will see our club move forward in a world where prospective members expect something comparable to their local sports centre or swimming pool.
Our RYA rep was extremely helpful in steering our application, and effectively every member has had a £100 subsidy toward capital investment. If in your opinion this grant money is being misspent in your club, perhaps your officers should have considered a better plan for how the money might be best spent. |

Sport England money comes partly from the government and partly from the lottery. I sort of think that if clubs need better facilities then they should be making some effort to get that themselves, and that the bigger commercially run clubs should not get much at all. But these grants are not easy to get; Sport England doesn't have much money at the moment, and what money it does have tends to go to those sports that can prove they are increasing participation.
Every month I fill out an online participation survey to give an indication of who is sailing at my club. Those figures feed back to Sport England who then determine what our sport is entitled to. It's sort of back to front in that the sports doing well get more, but at the same time, if poorly performing sports are not actively promoting themselves why should they get supported? Sport England does do some very useful things; it's about to launch a new campaign to get more women into sport, they help fund run england, a support network for fitness runners, plus they support an awful lot of inner city projects. Bearing in mind sailing mostly caters for white, middle class, middle aged types, mostly male, I guess we are lucky to get anything at all. Most grant applications have to show they are aiming to increase participation across minority groups, but how successful they are here you cn judge for yourselves.

I'm fairly gobsmacked at the thought of a club with more grant money and facilities than they need. Chuck some our way if you like...

I think the idea of joining a small club, as a newcomer the sport, is really off putting. The idea of trying to break into a clique that have known each other for 20 years, and the prospect of having to do 5 Sunday's of duties is utterly depressing. The reward, the chance to sail a rotting Enterprise on a windless gravel pit? And then you have to rush round like a blue arsed fly to mow the lawn and cook supper.
A cheap matinee film and slap up at the local world buffet is surely more appealing for most families! I simply can't see how many of the smaller, remote, clubs can appeal to fresh blood. Why don't RS run a professional club, where there is a spa, pool, badminton courts and all boats are club/RS owned? |
