not really- moomin said s/he was racing it... trying different angles, one assumes to reach a weather mark; not just blasting about on a demo, making upwind claims for any angle higher than a beam reach.

It's the sort of 'real world' feedback the boat desperately needs imho.  And would help to dispel some of the conjecture, hype and in all likelihood, wild claims around upwind planing.

I wouldn't say planing up wind, but that depends on your definition of planing! In that narrow wind range when you're fully powered up but not creating too much drag due to being overpowered on flat water I could see it being possible to do something that some people might call planing upwind. So far I've only sailed it in drifters or last Sunday's big breeze though.
Upwind in a breeze I'd say faster than a Laser, but then in a breeze I reckoned the Europe was faster upwind than a Laser. For me it's all down to rig adjustability. Both the Europe and Aero have that ability to flatten the sail off and keep out of that overpower drag mode for longer, despite the XD rig breaking capability of the Laser. As TT says tho whoever hikes hardest and works hardest to keep the boat flat will go fastest.

Moomin, this is great feedback and just what was needed.  Thank you for taking the time to update everyone.

???? The Radial often seems to be about as fast as the big rig upwind in Lasers IME.

I agree 100% in a breeze a radial is just as fast if not faster upwind than a full rig. Certainly in my experience of switching down once the full became too much of a handful for my mere mortal sailing ability.

Plus ths is Pete Barton at the helm I believe, quite handy with the waggle stick I understand.

Thats not the point I was making. In a howler the radial is at least as quick as the full is overpowered and will be dragging upwind. My point was that in normal conditions, let's say 12 knots, there is a huge difference in performance between the tree laser rigs, but it doesn't appear to be as big a gap between the aero rigs.

Yes, Peter is sailing the aero, but the blaze sailor finished within three places of him at the last Blaze Nationals and the Tasar sailor is very competitive. What the video and result clearly shows is that the boat is perfectly fast upwind.

gosh- if only the fanboys had said that initially, rather than the over-stated planing upwind nonsense.... think of the bandwidth saved and good vibes that would have been retained.
