Some nice heavy airs video from Hayling at the RS Aero/Tera weekend. 
The Aero5s were joined by some RS Aero/Tera parents who have bought Aeros rather than be left on the shore.  Some of the Hayling Aero fleet also joined us which all helps keep the youngsters on their toes!

It certainly takes off at the top mark! That video of the aero 9 upwind looks very slow/stally though... The kids in the 5s also look like they are struggling to get upwind in that sort of breeze.

It looks exactly how I'd expect the boat to look pushing through 18 knots upwind.  Quite Solo-ish in many ways.... and that's not a criticism- nice to see some proper upwind footage.

The question for Pete is whether he thinks that's optimum VMG.  Would the boat benefit from freeing-off a little?  Especially with 98kg on the rail.  Or is it best to punch on through.

From the Leigh & Lowton Revett Series Report....'in the adult fleet it was the lightweight RS Aero 7 of Gareth Williams (LLSC) that took the win. This was in part due to the Aeros electrifying down wind speed as, when on the same point of sailing, it was witnessed to keep pace with an RS400 while it (the RS400) was on a three sail reach'...that sounds pretty darned cool!

Certainly downwind it looks bleeding fast! Upwind it just doesnt seem to cut through the water so well... Is it quicker than a laser upwind in a blow? The video makes it look unlikely.

I was wondering when someone would pick up on that particular piece of journalistic licence!
I am the helm of that particular Aero, and yes for a short while (100yds or so) on the right gust at the right angle riding the 400's wake I was keeping pace but it's not as fast a 400 on a 3 sail reach.  Considerably faster than any other monosail single hander I've sailed though.
Upwind in that breeze over the course of the day I tried a few different modes, as it was the first time out in that kind of breeze. Most effective seemed to be blade off the sail, daggerboard up an inch or so and free off slightly. Basically the same way I sailed the Europe upwind in big breeze. There are definitely some more tricks to learn but it's certainly a rewarding sail with big grin factor.

wouldn't that depend entirely on who is driving the Laser.... it's incredibly techniquey to get it sailing to its best upwind, whereas my first impressions of the D-Zero (and aero by association) is that you wing it a bit and it won't suffer from poor technique in quite as dramatic a fashion.

The Laser will carry a bit more momentum, but certainly in 12-14 knots the aero is faster upwind and points better, but I think the verdict is firmly out on which are the fastest modes. What I think is interesting is the apparent parity of the sail sizes upwind, which must be a function of the lightness. 

Once there is a bit of breeze, there doesn't appear to be a lot between them, which you couldn't say about a 4.7/radial/full.

We had quite a long session of sailing in 12knots in a 9 with another 12kg lighter sailor in a 7 and there really was very little if anything between them upwind. Offwind the bigger sails gain and in marginal conditions will plane more quickly.
