I don't have an issue with aft sheeting at all, but as is the case with the Dzero, the bridle needs to be under a good amount of tension and the clever floating ring gives control of the angle. On this, the block is surely going to be all over the place and the span is so large that even with dyneema you won't have much control over where it is sheeting to. It 'looks' like it would be better with a centre sheeted bridle like the aero.

It would need something stronger than a Topper boom then, though.

Just moving the bridle one foot forward of the stern means that the mainsheet never catches on the 3k. It is the most obvious way of improving the Laser at zero cost; but of course, it's one-design - well sort of anyway, apart from large weight and rake variations!

Being on a raised bridle, the angles on the 3000 are all different anyway compared to a tight traveller.

The main sheet catching on the transom corners is a big main barrier to people using our club Lasers. I always get complaints so I was already going to move the bridles forwards. It's nice others think it will work. I'll move the blocks forwards as well. I won't move the original fairleads, just drill a small hole in the gunwale for a loop then lead the traveller rope on one side back to one of the fairleads and then to the usual cleat.
Easy cheap, hopefully will work well. The club lasers are only used for recreational sailing and none of us take it seriously anyway. |

Won't a tight traveller that far up the tiller cause problems? Just picturing the tiller rubbing on the rope as it moves back and forth - it may not matter in reality. I would say that you'll have to move it a fair way forwards, as otherwise you will find it simply loops round a bigger amount of stern quarter. Before doing the job, take a Laser out and watch very carefully what it is that happens when it gets caught.
You may find a better solution is simple to put tape on the corners so there is nothing for the sheet to hook on. I believe there is/was a part made you can put on if you are not racing. |

Thinking that one through, why don't Laser sailors who are using fake sails (and so aren't sailing Lasers any more anyway) tape the corners up on their boats?

You won't need such a tight traveller to give the current sheeting angle, but tightening it will allow you to pin the boom down at a wider angle too when the wind is up. Quite an advantage, I'd have thought.

Most people who sail a laser more than a dozen times learn to cope with the standard set up. The sheet only catches because it's allowed to go slack, and if it's not catching the transom, a slack sheet will be catching your ears or something. By the time people get around to buying a replica sail, they've learned all that. It's good training for sailing 40ft boats, where out of control mainsheets hurt. |

Many of our members only sail lasers a couple of times a year, so anything that makes them easier will be good.
I agree that the main may well still catch around the quarters so I'll do one first as an experiment. As you say we can also put tape on the corners. Yes, the tiller will rub on the traveller but as the traveller will go out almost to the extreme edge of the deck (unlike the present system where it is 40mm in)we might be able to get away with less tension. The sheeting angle (measured on the deck) will go from about 11 degrees now to about 17 and so vang sheeting maybe less important, so we'll be able to reduce vang tensions which will also make it easier for the occasional sailor. It'll be fun trying anyway and nothing lost. |
