Cedar strip? I never heard of using that but it does bend and works down well. I never saw it for sale except as trellis slats.

Pretty well known technology for boat building. Commonly used for big-ish (30' keelboats).

I'd clocked those cedar strips, was going to get them to nail the wood to as bearers.

I'm not into all that carcinogenic foam bothering breathing in all that crap,

I have considered foam sheets, but then they have to be glass or carbon sheathed and figured ply might in fact be lighter. I'm also looking at balsa and wondered about a thin laminate either side of a foam sheet, wondered if that might bend better.

Got to make up my mind soon, don't want to miss getting the stuff delivered before Christmas. We've got incoming, the place is going to be mental what better reason to retire to the man cave and build my 'shed'.

cedar strips used for paddly canoes, also :

swift solo : http://www.single-handedskiffs.com/constructioninformation/partsconstructionmaterials.html
National 12 : http://www.national12.org/blahdocs/uploads/dscn0006_1247.jpg

But don't breathe in the cedar dust - smells nice, but quite nasty for the lungs...

If I'm not mistaken one of the Bethwaite 18s was built in balsa strips. Possibly nice to work with than cedar, but will need some good sheathing.

In the US Kiri (aka Paulownia) is very popular. Lighter than cedar similarly stiff and frequently used to make surf boards (the wave riding kind). Sadly, it seems very difficult to source in the UK.

Graeme Cedar strip requires some wood skils (but not too many) and is expensive, if you cost your own time at more than £10/h, when compared to CNC polystyrene. If you wanted to be light you could build sandwich around the polystyrene, cut it apart, dig out the polystyrene, put bhds in etc and stick back together.
If you leave the polystyrene in there, you have a lot of capacity for modifying the shape (as you still have the polystyrene "Backing" material.

You got me thinking about wood and its health issues. Here is an interesting link that explains them

http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-allergies-and-toxicity/

It says balsa isn't that bad, but Australian red cedar looks a bit dodgy and as for some of the rest - complete horrors!

In the table Wester Red Cedar looks very bad indeed. If you go to the actual page for WRC in their database, it does say that "severe reactions are uncommon". Still not to be taken too lightly. A good particle filter mask is worth the investment.

I couldn't help noticing that "There have been no adverse health effects associated with Paulownia." Sounding better all the time :)
