Having not sailed the Aero i cant comment, but i found the chine on the zero really helped with downwind stability.  It just gives enough bite for you to rescue things.  Albeit Graham did a great job at disproving this with his windward capsize this weekend!

Hi ds2. The death roll phenomenon is common to any unstayed singlehander, and the combination of under sheeted main and dead downwind heading would have meant that the sailor in question would have capsized in any equivalent boat at that point - @ero; laser; finn;Europe; ok etc. He will probably admit that he would have swum several times at that point in his previous boat (300)
The boat was intentionally designed to be quite stable and forgiving which takes some people aback, possibly because it looks unusual.
I'd be happy to send out a beginner in one in most winds.
I have to admit that capsize isn't something that was high up my list when I designed it, but everybody seems to get on okay with that part too. You can get in over te back without kicking the doors
In if necessary. A big guy this weekend remarked that it was Far easier than his phantom, for wha that's worth. He initiated his capsize with a swan dive Into Grafham water, the nutter!

I'm going on a speed awareness course.. me.. no really I couldn't believe it either, that bloody Southampton Boat show trip, 37 mph on one of those dual carriageways, I wouldn't mind if I'd clocked 160 round the M25, but 37? In what should be a forty anyway?

PS I know you'll be answering this on your smart phone whilst driving with one eye on the rear view mirror and your mascara.

Cant seeing you gettign caught in a boat related speedtrap Graeme....

Oh little tip for you, they dont like cockyt**ts on speed awareness courses.  I got told to wind it in after arguing about reaction times.  They tried to tellme my reaction time had an effect on the stopping distance in snow.  I just couldnt stop myself.  Hard to beleive that I of all people would be like that.... ;-)

I shall pretend I'm posting on yots n yotting use the best gentlemanly behaviour I know.

My lip will be bleeding by the end of it, all 5 hours they tell me, can't wait to see what they think of my 1971 all paper fallen to bits driving license (yes I know, take a passport).

As to boat related speed trap, hands up all those with a Strava recorded over 20 knots..

I was done too. Infra red camera in the dark. The speed partnership told me I was over the limit for 6 seconds.. yes 6 seconds and they still did me. No traffic officer would have done that.

AA and RAC have both said that there is no concrete evidence that these things save lives. I have no issue with them around schools and the like, but they are breeding a great deal of ill will in our neck of the woods.

First political party that mans up, takes away the cotton wool and bans speed cameras will win with a landslide. Top Gear has the largest global viewing figures of any commercial programme. Time for the politicians to wake up to a bit less elf and safety and a bit more letting people live... Angry

Now thats gone and done it -I can hear the fun police coming for me......... Just wait until they find out we go dinghy sailing---in wind--out at sea--on our own, they will be closing down all clubs immediately.

Isn't that the other way round. I find it immensely depressing that the elf and safety stuff does seem to be more effective than relying on people to look after each other.

The trouble with speed enforcement I think is its so random. If it was "speed: you get caught every time" it wouldn't be so bad, but at the moment its a choice of driving legally and being tailgated to hell, or drive at the social convention and hope you don't run out of luck.
