Hang on. I never said it should be sheeted onto the centreline Simon. I am many things but not a complete Noob, i know how a rig works pretty well thanks very much. However the boom is well out over the gunwale and the boat above 'Her' is sailing at a much higher angle. So in my opinion it doesnt look like a traditional 'Upwind' video. There are very few classes (if any) where a boom spending more time over the Gunwale is classed as upwind. The D-one (a boat as you know i spent nearly 4 years sailing) sails with the boom in most conditons on the gunwale. It may drop further onto the wing in big winds. But even then its a very powerful boat and the toss up between VMG is questionable.
I am not questioning this ladies sailing technique whatsover, just what you are claming is upwind in the video. As frankly in my opinion its not. The later footage of the 5 however is!

Upwind in an unarig the boom should (usually) be just over the rear corner of the boat. Certainly true for most (relatively) narrow boats like the Laser, Supernova, Solo, Aero, D Zero, etc...
In higher winds boats with travellers tend to allow it to drop away a little. The rig does look like it flattens off nicely though. Shame they did not include some footage of the 9 (aside from a few seconds right at the start).

I suspect that given the breeze and the heaviest sailor being about 72kg, the 9 was perhaps a bit punchy upwind. The 7 looks pretty sweet though in those conditions.
And Null I know you are no Noob, just thought that Slingsby's upwind lateral boom angle looked very similar to Tracys in the aero clip. Cant be more than a couple of degrees either way. You would be surprised how many people get in a boat with centre sheeting like the Nova or the aero , don't understand the kicker, sheet in as close to the centreline and point up, then can't work out why they don't go! The 'traveller' on the laser and the zero just don't let you centreline, so maybe seem more obvious.

You can centre it on the zero - not that you'd ever want to for the reasons that you guys state.
Also, the zero carries pretty much full beam all the way aft - the reason for this is to allow a wider sheeting angle without requiring vang sheeting. Ie on a finn, 14 deg sheeting angle would be about a foot outside the gunwhale (finn is basically a cut down canoe with very tapered ends) whereas 14 deg is at the deck edge on the zero. |

I would disagree with that comment. The traveller on the D Zero will let you get very close to the centreline if you pull it right in then sheet on as the rear mainsheet blocks will be held on the boats centreline.

For the benefit of preserving the alleged nit-picking vibe, the reason you would want to do this is slow the boat down when sailing dead downwind. Maybe there's a moron in an asymmetric dinghy piling into the leeward mark, not a hope in hell of getting their kite down for a clean rounding..... it might be advisable to hold back for a seaman-like approach. The only other explanation could be freestyle capsizing.... like the reverse pitch pole for example? I think we are all in danger of forgetting these are beach boats, as well as racing dinghies. How would you know? You keep reminding us you haven't sailed the boat. The difference in the angles in the video looks no more and probably less than I would expect between me as a heavy 300 sailor who likes to foot, and a lightweight who needs to stuff....but I can't really know 'cos I haven't sailed it either. I can tell you that the *eros and the 2000 were pretty much level paced upwind in a F4 club racing 2 weeks ago. Both *eros pointed higher than the 2000, but went slower. Inconclusive which of the *eros pointed higher: different sailors were in different modes.
