What is it with you people and droopy booms? Seems to me its a bad idea both aerodynamically and ergonomically. Clearly though its a good idea from the POV of fashion, and so good for sales, but for the life of me I can't work out why.

Why would i do that Simon? Its £30 entry, no reduced rate for 1 day. Its 250 mile round trip on a road i spend too much of my life on already. With nothign that i can see to say the Sunday or Saturday are seperate series?? Am i missing something?
The same applies to the Dash, if that was not local i wouldnt bother. The tiger is different 2 days and a celebration of sailing all in the name of a good cause. Not to mention the cheapy travel lodge down the road, sailing on a big stretch of water. 2 Days at datchet, no thanks!

Ehhh? who like droopy booms? Why is it in fashion? Surely the OK, finn, laser, 505, Contender etc. are hardly modern designs? WHo even montined it was good for sales. If we are talking quoted sails figures it would appear the Aero is a real hot potato and breaking records. In fact more modern deigns have higher booms then 'Droopy' I also beleive Dan explained his thoughts around why to you before Jim. i guess you know better though. Personally for me, i have no preference to either style High or low. Unless we are talking about Snipe boom heights, that looks a little odd to me. It certainly would not be a deal breaker on any boat i bought. Albeit the contender boom always looked too low for me.

The aero needs kicker on to give it the sail shape. Upwind the booms are pretty horizontal on the 7 & 9.

As I said 7 & 9 I can comment on. The 5 may sit a bit higher. Bear in mind on the 5, he is young, very light and sailing it for the very first time - and in a breeze. Look at the 7 at 0.41m thats horizontal give or take, and in quite a strong breeze. If you look at the 7, it looks pretty damned good trucking upwind at that point.

Simon i dont want to get into an argument again i really dont but he isnt going up-wind. His boom is well outside the gunwale. The boat above looks like is heading about 10 degrees higher and sailing on its ear (more traditional upwind, granted he could be being lifted) I appreciate we had the debate around what is 'Upwind' but to me upwind is not somewhere between a fetch and beat. I will say they chap is moving at a fair old lick for a unarig hiker though. But i expect Vroony was asking for good old fashion slogging it out upwind, not off on a fine fetch.

Clearly a high boom is good for sales- the Supernova has eaten in to Laser club sailing territory sporting one, the Aero also has one, and we are led to believe that sales are exponential and defy all expectations and past records for new class launches.
Visually, I'm always going to find a well sailed 505, Contender or Finn to look 'right'/'nice'/'more appealing' in upwind photos.... but that's my generation, mid thirties now, they were the boats that had us wowed as kids. When it comes to very high performance sailing, a windsurfer with the slot closed can still turn heads- across the generations. So probably best not to rule out the aesthetic appeal of a 'droopy boom', especially when you use some higher tech materials other than a slab of dacron for the sail cloth. 1:10-1:12 is the most sheeted in. This like most una rigs, you don't remotely centreline or even sheet inside the boat upwind. Sheet inside the boat on a supernova and it stops. big mistake all people make when they first sail them. Sheet to the quarter and get the boat flat and it really works. The sailor in the aero 7 ( its a 'She' ) is a very good sailor and I wouldn't expect even the tightest upwind angle to be much more than that in most conditions.
Compare it to the d-one and sheeted in upwind its almost kissing the inner edge of the wing. Unless everyone at the club is doing it wrong, that was the quickest way upwind and check out at certain Tom Slingsby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXm-ZvtD8jY between 1.00 and 1:21 and judging by the way he dumps Mr Teply (I believe?) upwind, there was not a lot wrong with his sail angles! |
