Currently stripping down a VO70 and still got plenty of bimbling to do on my Merlins back home... That will do until the new year then maybe take on a few more winter projects...

Every now and again I wonder about taking on that boat - then I have another drink and the feeling passes.

Only because it seemed a pity for it to get burned, but next time I need the space that might be its fate anyway.

Early (prewar) British Moths seem to have had masonite (=hardboard) decks.
If anyone's keen to reproduce this I know where there's such a boat needing a new home, but its a huge restoration job. Edited by JimC - 02 Dec 14 at 5:06pm |

Nothing wrong with hardboard. I remember caravans and sidecars built from it. There used to be something called 'oil tempered hardboard' that was more waterproof. It is heavier than ply though and tears if you ask too much of it. Lets go back to wood and canvas, we used to make canoes that way. I bet you could make that light and stiff using modern materials

many years ago just post war, in the days before marine glues were as good as they are now my dad and his mate who wanted a more exciting boat than the old Lymington prams they used to surf down the waves in the Hurst narrows built a small planing dinghy out of hardboard. Heavily varnished it lasted about a season before becoming waterlogged and falling apart. It was mentioned in the local rag as "A most unusual craft appeared on the Lymington river" I think it had a fair bit of use before it fell apart and there were probably a few comments about bandits in the local racing but they had a lot of fun and I dont expect they did any H&S risk assessments. There is a not very good picture of it somewhere. I will see if i can dig it out and scan it.
