It can be a bit quieter around Christmas .... time to revisit the 'odd' concept occasionally !

I'm wondering wether to go for a cardboard mock up before committing to wood or foam..
Then again it's doubling the work. |

Card bends in different ways to Ply, so a shape that looks good in a card model can turn out badly in the full sized thing, but I don't think it happens the other way round - if it doesn't work in card, you are stuffed in plywood. 10th scale card, and if it looks good, go for it!

Why not just stick with card? I'm sure you can waterproof it and structurally it should be sound. You can make bikes from it and you can be buried in it, why not sail it?

I seem to recall that someone did build a Heron out of hardboard, which lasted a while. Any more info Rupert?

Can't help on the Heron, I'm afraid, but I do know Moths (or at least a Moth) were built out of cardboard. I've built model boats from card many times - coated in varnish it works OK, and these days epoxy would work wonders. You could easily cold mould it, too.

I spend enough time folding business cards into weird shapes, so a 10th scale model would be good I've got one tricky bit where the twin bit attaches to the mono bit to work out so it doesn't just fall in half when it comes up on it's rail.
Then this time I'll show y'all and maybe listen to the feedback more than I might have done last time. It is still a bit of a radical shape. |
