I never, ever had a problem gettign back in a 300 from a capsize. Apart from when i lost my dagger board (I never bothered to replace the elastic) in Abersoch bay in a steady 20 knots. The 300 you sink a wing and roll in, righting lines were fitted as standard. In fact righting a 300 is easy, easier it seems then it is to capsize the thing. Which for those who have not sailed one, i can confirm is pretty easy!

I have to say when I bought my Blaze my other option was a 300 but I was shied away by talk from an experienced sailor about how unstable the thing was and that fact that is was impossible to sail (in his opinion). This is a guy who is capable of winning races in the Fireball class at National and international level so definitely no slouch on the waggle stick Fast forward a few years and I eventually get the chance to have a go in one and I wondered what all the fuss was about. It was a nice sail (I must admit I didn't chuck it in on purpose, the owner asked me nicely not to).

I think back in the late 90's it was marketed incorrectly. IIRC I thought that it was a more modern laser. It certainly wasnt, but the initial influx were sold to the wrong people. It was/is fairly radical from an SMOD point of view and takes some commitment to get past the wet stage. But its a great boat and a great bunch of guys sail them. But one thing i dont think i would ever say is its difficult to get one upright and back in.
Even if it was, its a poor comparrison. Where exactly do you draw the line? The Aero is the RS answer to the Laser (so compare to the Laser) otherwise we may as well compare it to a musto or a foiling moth.

As an 'outsider' would it not be the simplest thing in the world to organise a series of JOINT vists to clubs around the country - that is Aero / Zero. Anyone with a brain in their head would obviously sail both in advance of throwing real money in any direction.
Forum 'discussion' could then just perhaps more usefully reflect on the positives and negatives of both designs - with some fresh and perhaps more objective views coming forward. If they are 'good' then neither supplier should have any proper reason not to agree and nothing to fear. Currently it is like sitting in a noisy sports pub in Manchester listening to locals discussing the two local football clubs.... when the only acid test is what really happens on the field. Come on guys whats the risk ? ..... ![]() Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 26 Nov 14 at 11:37am |

We did that at Grafham Water. We all ended up buying Zeros so not sure RS would be in a rush to do that again! I might be wrong though.

Almost a good analogy Mike, but i think really its slightly different.
First of all James doesnt own either boat, nor does he have an interest in either class. There is no secret he had ordered a Zero and cancelled the order. Its no secret that he setup the association website (we dont have big budgets or the knowledge to do this and James was called upon as a friend) I have not commented on how the aero sails as a boat. Simply because i have not sailed one! I have always been critical of what I beleive is shoddy marketing messages. That is what i am critical of. It could be a new skiff for all I care. It comes across that I am negative towards the boat itself because i purchase a competitor. I understand that people think i have other agendas, i can assure you all AGAIN, that i dont. I purchased my Zero. Its mine. If i want to paint it pink I can. It has nothing to do with anyone else. Simon (I guess the other team) sailed both boats and made a decision. He has not been overly critical of the Zero he made his decision on the back of what was happenening at his club. I completely get that! I dare say if i was in his position i would do the same thing! I dont criticise him for that decision. As for joint demo days, i guess that depends on how clubs want to manage this process. More importantly how the club members instigating the demo days want to run it. I cant comment on how Suntouched run the demo programme, its nothign to do with me.

I've said elsewhere joint demo's are the only way to go, you can close deals at demo's where the customer can't slide off saying they want to 'try' the other boats.
Lets face it half the success of the FOM was the chance to boat hop in the last race of the day. there should be more events like that. Better to have a multi class demo day/ race weekend or two at the front and back of each season and invite the old buffers from the PYAG along with blankets on their bath chairs to spot what is actually going on for a change. Well then which one is going to step up to the plate first ? (You would look good even if you might privately need to hold your nose !)
Don't leave it to the clubs or punters to suggest or push it further - it is totally logical. Most clubs would be happy to host a multi-class day ... nobody wants to look like they might not welcome the challenge do they ? There is enough barking and froth on the forums for more than one lifetime already ... yes lets see them off the leash together. Even the Manchester footie clubs have to appear together occasionally.... ![]() Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 26 Nov 14 at 3:13pm |

]QUOTE I am not sure what your weight and age was when you last sailed a 300, but a 70kg sailor will be noticeably faster than 90kg sailor because it has such a low wetted suface area which grows considerably as weight increases. Oh and if you thought a 100 was challenging to board..... [/QUOTE]
Not many 70kg 300 sailors featuring in events results are there ? How heavy is the National Champ ? (he who borrowed a Phantom last year) ? |
