Recently after being fed up with replacing bulbs in my lighting board, I splashed out on a one with LED lights - no problems so far - touch wood!

re the 6 ply 8" tyres - they wear out too, marginally less quickly. I tried those before i chopped the trailer about.

They still didn't last the season, but bear in ind that i do keep the boat at home therefore do more towing than most people.

I guess all tyres whatever their size are not created equal. FWIW I wouldn't buy such a safety critical item over the internet on price from an unknown to me manufacturer. I have always bought tyres from and had them fitted by a local independent firm, the experience of people who have been in the trade for many years is well worth a few extra quid. BTW. I now have trailer wheels dynamically balanced, the difference is rather enlightening.

Those standard 8" wheels are awful, the tyres are cheap crap.  But even worse is the pressed steel wheels which rot under the powder coat.  Upgrading to 10" isn't that hard a task Clive, the wheels just bolt on but you will need new mud guards and modified brackets.  It's a worthy conversion the tyre quality on 10" wheels seems better as do the wheels themselves.  Not to mention how much better the trailer tows with 10" wheels.

I have 13" wheels on my double stacker and it handles the road beautifully.

Now lighting boards.  What a joke, I go through about two a year.  My latest one is a 13 pin socket affair as my new car only has a 13 pin socket option.  It's much better than the old fashion 7 pin sockets which get trashed really quickly.  Now if someone made an LED lighting board buit onto a carbon board with a decent guarantee I would pay handsomely.

I have LED light fittings on an old lighting board. The new ones just look cheap and nasty.

The LED are so much better and brighter than the light bulb ones, especially when training doubles at night that cover your car lights, these can be seen from a distance.

As 2 of my 3 lighting boards are on the back of boats in storage for the winter, maybe I'll look into the idea of LED lighting, as I really don't like the board I have left.

Cheap LED lights aren't necessarily any better than normal lamps, and if you're buying anything off "The Internet", make sure it is approved for UK use as this is the kind of thing the police will pull you up for if it's obviously wrong.

I work on a 'you get what you pay for' principle on both trailer tyres and lights, and haven't had a problem for years.  It can be quite hard to find the good stuff though - the average trailer spares place tends to be focused on the bottom end of the market, such as grandads doing a couple of short trips a year to the garden centre.

I ended up getting pretty much everything from a farm parts supplier, which have to sell the better stuff as farmers use trailers pretty much every day. Each light fitting was more expensive than a complete lighting board, and the tyres about the same cost as the ones on my car, but I think has worked out cheaper in the long run.

I use a local trailer specialist firm, they give good advice and are very reasonably priced.  I recently had to replace my jockey wheel i was expecting a £50 bill, I took the old one in and bingo he came out of the store and charged me £13 for a replacement unit.  I take local expertise over internet price every time.

Clive, my experience was that the basic 8" tyres often only lasted 2500 miles, and that most second hand trailers had dangerous and illegal tyres either due to age or wear (by age I mean they had cracked). I learned to always have a spare wheel, jack and torque wrench with me when I picked up boats. The caravan club recommend that you change tyres on your caravan/motorhome every 5 years: when I bought my motorhome the back tyres were 10 years old and had cracked sidewalls. If you go and see Jubby at Sailboat Trailers, I'm sure the guys can change you to 10" wheels and also supply a decent LED lightboard! It isn't that far from Frensham. I should say this is connected to where I'm now working so I do have an interest but I don't get anything for saying this and I genuinely think they can sort you a better set up. I did see trailers in my time at RS where the geometry was wrong and that massively affects tyre wear so have a look at the tyres and if they are not wearing evenly that needs sorting, it was very possible with the bolt-together trailers to build them out of square.

I'd second that.  Great service from Jubby.
