Larger sailors are unlikely to flock to it in great numbers - imagine being 20kg heavier than your mate with the same rig - that's a huge amount (relatively) in such a light boat and would render the big lads hopeless in lighter breezes.
That's probably what helped to kill the Rooster 8.1 - it should have been a perfect option for bigger guys without getting into the complexity and expense of the Finn, Phantom etc - but it was useless coz the little streaks that normally sailed Standards or even Radials could pop in an 8.1 rig and smash the big boys on light days. Weight carrying boats simply need....weight and size |

Surely if over a series the points follow helm and boat combined and not just helm then those "little streaks" will get blown away on windy days and thus the heavy weights will still be in the choccies?

It will all come out in the wash and there will no doubt be ranges within the ranges and wind speed that are optimised, but for most club sailors a couple of better tacks will be more important to their results than 5kg weight difference.
I have always thought that the lighter the boat, the more the weight differential will pay its part, so the lightest person with the biggest sail will get more advantage downwind than they lose upwind provided they can depower the sail properly. That said, if the boat planes so early for all weights, once on the 'plane' there should be less speed differential. In marginal planing conditions, if the lightweights in the range plane earlier, they will be gone. Where the boat plays a more significant part of the all up weight, think blaze, solo, d-one, the performance evens out or perhaps even falls back towards the heavier sailor. (So Mike , don't go shaving the blaze! :-) ) As I said, it will all come out in the wash.

no different to existing class racing then... that statement is very true of my experience with a Solo at the upper end of the accepted weight range- across all sea and wind conditions. What I need is a boat designed for a 20 stone bloke (or woman- let's not be sexist). That would be great on a Wednesday night drifter ;-)

So, an even bigger Finn style boat - plenty of weight in an 18 foot hull, fairly narrow, huge sail? A boat for real men... (coz I doubt women would want to sail such a beast) Edited by Rupert - 06 Nov 14 at 4:19pm |

No they won't, because the lightweights will switch to smaller rigs and leave the big boys lumbered with a PY that's been partially set by lighter, quicker boats. Not in class racing of course, but how many Aeros will be raced like that? Even the clubs that don't allow rig-switching in a series will run plenty of one-off races where people can use their rig choice of the day. But we've been all through this on the Rspeculation thread.

it was lilac... and it needed commitment across the wind range to live up to its claim to support 95-100kg sailors. I don't choose to race dinghies in windy weather anymore, there are far better ways to use the wind and water when its windy.

if its a one of race not a problem with choosing the best rig for the day, they just have to live with the guilt. as for a series i personally wont allow rig switching if im RO, its a different class and if theyre that desperate to win then a bit of training might serve them better, but not everyone is as fussy as me when it comes to playing by the rules apparently.
