Yeah that did have a reputation, especially in a breeze. The 'X' rig as it was known initially was a big improvement.

first time I sailed one was light winds, two-up down the Tamar... great fun, and definitely felt like a massive leap in power and technology from my Laser!
Can you imagine the forum sh*tfight that would have gone down if it were around when Laser / Topper and a little-known underdog called RS launched the EPS, Blaze and 300 respectively? That would have been amusing.... The Laser Marketing Machine etched this image on my brain from those years: ![]() Talk about hyped up photography- certainly all show, no go and a victim of over-promise, under deliver product lifecycling. I don't think I'd seen one on the water for years until Grumpf dragged one out of the nettles somewhere and went wax lyrical on it. How times have changed hey... that imagine wouldn't be out of place on the Sailing Anarchy advertising banner these days ;-) Edited by kneewrecker - 05 Nov 14 at 11:22am |

I have seen a few and I thought they looked quite funky but they had Nationals? at Burton about 5 years ago when we where there and about 5 boats turned up. They sure as hell did not go like the above photo!
Of course Young Fuller has revived the class now with his youth and funkability....rock an' roll! |

There is an EPS at Hunts. I have never seen it going that fast, except when being towed.

From my experience of pulling them out to go sailing, I don't believe it's beyond the wit of man to design wings that would reattach just as easily. Something to push the wing-end onto in the boat, and Velcro straps on the gunwale for example, et voila. |

I'm still of the opinion that the folding in wings I put on my singlehander were a better solution than sliding things. Might be more expensive to manufacture though. I had a pivot point located so that the wings when folded in met in the middle, and a line each side you pulled in and cleated off to hold them in place when unfolded.

Yep, and, to be fair, I love my EPS ![]() ![]() Yeah, it's hard work upwind, especially if you try and go really high, but sail in 'skiff-mode' and just go for speed over height and it's not too bad. I go 'Assymetric' downwind and it's all good usually....on the reaching angles it's fast enough for me ![]() Thing is, it's all about getting out and go sailing surely? Newest boat/old boat/fast boat/slow boat/fashionable boat/unfashionable boat.....I'm not fussed really, I just go out, have some fun and come home smiling. If that's in my EPS...or my Lightning.....or the 420.......so be it ![]() |

Allowing for photoshop, I've seen the EPSs at Whitefriars looking like that. Shortly after, they look upside down, though.
Always did look like a loo seat, though. |
