I have to say I found the SN hard work when I borrowed one. It also had very heavy mainsheet loads.
It did seem to go fast enough though just not my cup of tea.

I have watched a lot of Supernovi mainly from behind......I think the rig makes the helm do the work in a blow, there is very little flexibility in it. I watched my friend going up wind in survival conditions on Sunday and it was a joy to behold but he had to work very hard hiking/spilling/steering. Two other Novas out with storm sails up and less skilled sailors in control just went zip/splash. The less able helm in a Byte was having other problems but was helped out by the rig blowing off in the gusts.
I seem to remember Mark Giles telling me that he intended to put an unstayed Lightning type rig on Supernova but he could not make it work on the bigger format.

The other hilarious problem (to us onlookers) is the propensity for Novi to sail backwards in irons. I presume it is because of the fully battened, with neutral tension, sail. Other fully battened boats do not seem to suffer this.

I have seen Solos do it too, but the flow reversing over the sail can be slightly off putting when approaching becalmed SNs at a mark - mind, it can open gaps to nip through!

The supernova sail material is quite rigid, but the battens make it hold shape in the light.
The Supernova is very easy to depower and will work in a large wind range. Drop the forestay off and it dramatically reduces the power. If people are regularly overpowered they probably just aren't doing it right. Use the rig properly and you can keep itdead flat in 18-20 knots.

Simon, I suspect you are right that user error is to blame, certainly when I've been having a go!

That's spot on with my experience of sailing one for a couple of seasons. Lovely hull shape, loved sailing it most of the time until I was tee-boned by an out of control enterprise when I was stuck in irons. ![]() Edited by Blue One - 23 Oct 14 at 12:07pm |

Last Sunday my friend was sailing in considerably more than that! I regularly see Novi with raked masts but you cannot do that gust to gust, hence plug for Byte.........
