The Merlin Rocket CA still recommends age banded handicaps which are related (roughly) to design changes and which MR sailors can use to persuade club handicappers that a 30 year old NSM design with a hog stepped rig should not sail off the same handicap as the latest Canterbury Tales mod 4 with deck stepped carbon rig and one string adjustment.

If the PY takes the average handicap for a class, and the class makes allowances for older boats. Surely new boats should be sailing on a handicap lower than the PY!

Yes, they should. The Merlins should have a system where it is, say, 10 or 15 year old boats which sail off the current handicap, and a -20 band for the newer boats. Can you imagine that happening?

Who said anything about PY being an average? Average across what??

It is surely just a number spewed out of an algorithem that is derived from results submitted by clubs. The MR age related handicaps are intended to encourage those with older boats to get out and sail at club level.

Most of those sailing the newer boats off the base PY will anyway enjoy class racing through the national Silver Tiller circuit or the regional circuits eg Midland and Thames rather than bothering with handicap events.

An average across boat ages and sailing ability.

That few new boats race on handicap (really? I suspect more do, especially in winter, than you are making out) means the results are even more skewed in their favour.

The -17 for the GL thing would seem to reflect that more modern boats join in with the big winter events, thats for sure - pro jockeys selling their wares? What does SWS data mean, though?

Ah, could be.

Looking at the Laser handicap at 1115, do they tend to pack out the top 1/2 of the fleet at these events?

The X1 handicap looks pretty quick 935?  Thats got to be in the running for the fastest no assited hiking boat based on that list.
