a decent finn or d-one will be insured for twice the price of your average club hack... stands to reason the premium is double.

yeah but a phantom at the same price is less than half the price. Still carbon rigs, plastic sail, etc. The only difference would be to the repair price of the hull, as the D-one is partially carbon. Maybe thats the reason. But then again isn't the aero made of carbon too?
Actually though what has this got to do with the Solution???? Three of them on Apolloduck. Nice boats and well sorted, though they do have the problem of a crowded market. Any new boat is going to struggle in that niche unless they have a unique selling point

Once there are reasonable numbers of a boat around the insurance will reflect the claims record. In the past there have been classes which have been notorious wreckers and claimers, and premiums tend to follow.

I think the d1 premium is more to do with the type of boat and cost of complete replacement more than anything else. I have yet to see one involved in a big insurance claim that I know of. Not seen a production boat mast break...pretty well built to be honest. The premium is double that of a similar valued phantom, which I have seen major insurance claims on. However as Jim says it will be down to historic claims. Also number of policies etc. D-one is still relatively unknown quantity with insurers at the moment. But also its a fast boat and can damage other boats easily, so relative really.

Maxi
It has nothing to do with the boat why the D one insurance, but I bet it has doubled this year due to the influx of slow kamikaze guys we both know! Beware anybody else in Weymouth Harbour. Have a good weekend. Gordon |

I worked on the basis that if it was blowing I would only be near other boats to the first mark, then I was bound to chuck it in on the first downwind leg, after which I never had to worry about collisions with others

Given that, in 30 ish years of racing I've made three claims from my own side and two of them were for shredded kites, I wonder if the cost of replacement spinnakers is influencing premiums? Main and jib can be patched, but easy to rip a kite across several panels and that used to mean replacement, might not do nowadays been over fifteen years since I had to call the insurance company

Well three of us got skunked on another attempt at getting a demo in a Solution, we declined the offer of being able to view it but not with the cover off. It was a tad windy on Saturday and we can't reschedule for at least a fortnight.
So there we have the reason classes like this don't get off the ground, how long is it we've been trying to get our asses into one? October? This boat I would have thought with it's centreboard could be more suitable than Zero's and Aeros for lots of applications, someone just needs to market it better. In fact what it needs is a carbon rig, un stayed or short stayed like the EPS and re-launched. |

Graham, you just need daggerboard therapy - simpler, lighter, no slot replacement nonsense, easier to repair/replace and more efficient. I don't really find using it in shallow water that much more difficult provided the brain is working. Tried an aero yet - should definately compare with a Solution. similar size but much better performance. The yoof in the 5 are looking worryingly quick so suits the light ones.

My current ride has a daggerboard, I know this, because of the frequency of interactions with things underwater and the split daggerboard case that I had to repair not long since, plus the chunk missing from the bottom of the foil.
I tried an Aero months ago, it also has a daggerboard with a very light hull surrounding it, I can see me opening that up from a-hole to breakfastime as the quaint old sailing term dictates and the same would apply to the zero I realised after the split db incident.
