The Solution.

   So now, what makes the RS Aero/D Zero that much better than a Solution (Formerly the Red Eye) why didn't it catch on? On paper it has all the attributes, it's modern, has a retracting CB, is made by Ovingtons, has a laminate rig, around the same size as our topical boats of the moment and has the benefit of a relatively benign handicap (1080)

So what went wrong? Why isn't this a solution to my or anybody else's  sea/lake problem?

With hype sometimes reality could be something else.

Was there a massive fallout? I note one company started with it then it changed very early in its marketing lifespan that's not always a good thing.

	AIUI it is very difficult to sail to that handicap.

	The couple who share one at Hunts say that it is difficult to sail to handicap but is very nice on a reach. They are both pretty handy with the waggle stick but struggled to beat Lasers being sailed by those who were of lesser ability than them (whereas when they had a laser they were comfortably ahead of them).

	Surely there haven't really been enough returns for the boat to have a particularly reliable handicap, given how few appear to be around? At that point, maybe the clubs where it is sailed should be looking at their results and working out what would be more fair? However, ignoring the handicap, could it be that the boat proved to be a solution to a problem that didn't exist? t isn't much faster than a Laser, it doesn't have the fleets of a Solo or again the Laser, it isn't much (any?) lighter than either, it already has the Supernova as the "alternative" boat doing pretty well, and the Phantom is there for the top end of the weight range, especially since the rig became more flexible. Now the Aero and Zero are out there, I can't see it going anywhere.

	I agree it's not going anywhere now, I just wondered why it didn't go anywhere at the time, I mean BS aside there is not much difference between it and the dynamic duo. But you say it won't beat a Laser? Yet it's handicap is faster, not another example of yardstick inaccuracy then, so did it get slated at the get go and that stifled uptake? I can't believe anyone in 2005 would commit to moulds at Ovington for a boat that was actually slower than a Laser yet launched with a yardstick of 1070 (even though the Laser was probably 1078 then).

	Not sure of the history, but it never seemed to get over the new boat "hump" and into fleet status... At L&L we've got the Solution on 1095 and the Laser 1072, so it's given a chance.

	I think it is significantly different to a Zero or Aero. It has a stayed mast, lots of controls and isn't/wasn't cheap. As such, it goes slap bang up against the Solo, with its established circuit, strong residuals, training days, and, perhaps most important of all, support and development from the nations best sailmakers.

	So, given it appeared to me at least to be from the same 'camp' as the Phantom (first time I saw it, it was on the same stand and billed as the lightweights Phantom), then why wasn't it permitted to be developed like the Phantom? I note it's supposed to be light yet has a tin rig, surely with a carbon mast and free to be developed sails it could develop like a Solo/Phantom? Edited by iGRF - 29 Sep 14 at 1:01pm

	I have no idea whether it is faster or slower than a Laser, but it certainly isn't enough faster to have clear water between. On the other hand, if it is much nicer to sail, then speed wouldn't really matter, so at that point it is probably just down to critical mass never happening.
