As all the multi-rig classes seem to stick to the same boom length, the amount of spare boom sticking out from the clew is a (ahem...) clue.

Of course you can sail with a big rig or small rig as the mood and wind dictates, and that will increase your sailing pleasure. But you should not then count results from the different rigs (different classes!) as the same entry. As Jimbo says, that is not really any different to switching between a Phantom and a Contender and expecting to count your results as one entry. Even if you used the appropriate handicap for the class that would be unfair. To do so would reduce everyone else's enjoyment and chances of success. |

... But anyone maximising their sailing pleasure with a Phantom and Contender probably wouldn't give an airborn copulation for their series position. MM highlights the main difference- there's no confusing a Phantom with a Contender from the race hut, so you are not reliant on word perfect signing on sheets.

What, six pages and none of it would matter one little bit at our Club.
All talk of what's fair and what's not. Big rig, little rig? All's fair to us. We have adopted equal points to all helms whatever you sail in a series and same for crews: the points follow the person not the boat.

Cheque book sailing? What, where did that come from?
Not where I live in the real world. A Club Comet, juniors in a Topper or crewing for various bods off the slipway, own boat or helping out a mate get a race. All get equal points.

It is definitely three separate classes at class association events, exactly the same as a laser.
At your club you can do whatever your club allows.
No confusion here. |

We did the same as you, DD (I introduced it when rear com sailing), but when a couple of people started using it as a pick your boat for the weather thing, rather than a get everyone sailing thing, it all turned a little sour, and the current people in charge decided to change it back. Not sure it was a good move, changing it back, as people will still want to sail various boats for reasons unconnected to winning, and they will be counted as several people again, so meaning very few qualifiers again.

Yes, its difficult... One sailor knocked up 6 different classes n our Wednesday series this year which as its dual scored for personal handicaps is a nightmare for me! He's definitely picking boats for the weather but as its mainly a case of borrowing an RS200 when its too windy for his young crew to manage the 400 kite you really don't want to discourage it. The same applies to people jumping into singlehanders if their crew is unavailable. |
