You signed up to an insurance comparison website - I see you do have a problem, it will be rubbish upwind ![]() I expect the boat to be treated exactly the same as a laser 4.7, radial, full, so there is no confusion. |

As I said before, if someone is consistently sailing with multiple rigs there's an excellent case to score them with a lower handicap than if they were using the same rig all the time, even the big rig. If you want to discourage a situation where sailors believed they had to have multiple rigs to be competitive it might be appropriate. To my mind purchasing a selection of different rigs is quite a different situation to reefing down a standard sail. Restricting doing so is not so very different from prohibiting equipment changes at a championship, which many classes do. |

No need- RS were very clear on this from the get-go. There are 3 separate classes from the outset, I don't understand the confusion personally. If someone switches rigs with the Aero then it's not dissimilar* from sailing a Phantom in the light stuff and Contender when the breeze can support your arse on the wire. One assumes only a complete c*ck would not declare the difference when signing on, and/or expect their fellow sailors to readily accept their results as one entry on a series. (Well except for the fact that RS are making it a lot cheaper to get more sailing out of your boat budget...) Edited by kneewrecker - 25 Sep 14 at 5:50pm |

Switching boats mid series and keeping the same PY seems a little fanciful!
Either there is an Aero class with a single PY, or there are three classes with three PYs. I hope (and believe) it is the latter, otherwise a £6k boat has just become a £7.7k one. Of course, if folk do abuse that and use different rigs anyway, the PY will drop and those sailing legitimately will struggle to compete. |

But nonetheless, many clubs won't restrict rig usage. It'll actually be quite difficult to police what people do - RO's have more pressing matters, and most competitors won't even think about it.
I still have to look hard at Lasers sometimes to tell which is which, and often have to rely on the sail cut/shape of the window. Aeros have similar cuts/windows, but OK they do have a little number on the sail - if you can read it - it's less than sail-number size. ![]() |

I am genuinely suprised that there is not a clearer diffence between the rigs. We went through this debate witht the 100. The radials have a blue clew and distinct sail panel difference, apart from the size difference and a tiny number on the sail how can you tell the difference? I think RS could do with pitting some differnt colour panels or indicators. This would define each class if they are to be different classes, if it's all one class then lokoking the same doesn't matter.

I'm sure we will do what most clubs would do. If people switch the odd time and are not pushing the front of a series we will leave alone. However if there are going to be threatening trophy positions then we will have to act and look at the handicap. Mostly likely they would be given the faster handicap.
Fortunately most people in this position are good enough to handle a full size sail in any conditions that racing will be held in, and they generally realise that swapping rigs to gain advantage is not sporting. I would be very disappointed if a boat supposedly for everyone, became a lightweights only boat because rig swapping would be allowed. There are already precious few boats that work for us heavyweights and certainly none we can also share with our children or other halves! |

I just don't get this "not sporting" business. If I'm out sailing, I want to get the best experience I can, and that wouldn't include being underpowered or overpowered. Switching rigs would increase my sailing pleasure.
Certainly, our Laser sailors appreciate the option of switching, and as I say, the PY will adapt to the practice.

One of our guys switches between the radial and the main on his Laser, I'm not sure how 'they' deal with it, he does win now and again, as do most Lasers if they even hang around in the approximate start area and troll along behind.
I can't imagine the others would be happy if he switched PY's as well, but stranger things have happened, I do agree with the practise, as MM says if it enhances the experience or more importantly gets someone out racing when otherwise they'd be compromised it's a good thing. |
