Medway
.... exactly as implied surely .. I do think we can assume the vast majority here do appreciate that 'sail area' and 'pace' are not simply tied with some static ratio. Though it might be interesting for forums if it were ! And maybe it could be called the 'Jeremy Clarkson relationship' so it is more easily understood. Mike L. |

Speed is anything but directly related to sail area. Even in very light airs when wave drag would be minimal it would not be more than the square root of the sail area. I could imagine that with the Fire sail being higher aspect ratio, so maybe having a better lift/drag ratio, and getting overpowered later, that it might even be quicker upwind for a given helm in strong winds, although you'd likely miss the area off-wind.

I am guessing 806 is the 'Fire' sail despite having Blaze
written on it..... This helps greatly to produce low sheet loads - the
objective is for the sail to mostly appeal to those with less upper body
strength ... as said before, young(er), Old(er), light(er) and females.
Keeping the luff length works well and ‘Fire’ is very very 'easy' without too
much of a pace compromise... and certainly not by 15%. |

![]() ![]() Both shots with late prototype 'Fire' sails - so effectively production ones. The default Fire sail material is however the same stuff as we use for Blaze, Halo2, Blaze and Icon - but if you like the darker stuff it can be supplied for Fire - it makes not a jot of difference - unless you like it. We and the CA are talking with Y&Y and others about formal reviews of Fire .... and will be providing 2 boats - one a regular full width Blaze with Fire sail and the second a rather lightweight and 'special' Fire ... with fixed narrower wings. It is also being suggested that whoever reviews it (probably at Lymington btw) is also accompanied by another tester .... someone from the demographic Fire is primarily targetted at ..... female, very lightweight, young or old(er). I had a look at their results not long ago, wondering how Clive and I note Nick Craig did so well in assym single handers, it would have to be big enough for them to use their kites to advantage, and or the big sail on the RS100, that small sail would fall prey to anyone half decent in a Laser.
When are we going to hear about or see pictures of the 'Fire' after it's recent overall victory at the Round Island race? I'm not sure which I'm more mad about, one boat being overly handicap advantaged or the other being overly disadvantaged, why can't folk just go in the middle and shoot for a fair figure? |

It is also a strange shape, almost triangular with the club being right at the windward end under all the trees. Nice and open down the bottom end though. Never sailed there but did walk round it.
