Hi Dougal

To answer your query form the other thread .... the one in the photos from the 'Battle of the Classes' with Matt sailing it was one of the earlier 'tall' mast sails.  The revised version can utilise standard Blaze spars with just a rake alteration - it was needed to greatly reduce the 'entry' cost to trhe Halo option that previously needed a second mast ... and now it don't !

There have been trials of both against each other and they are very very close in performance and we have not been able to see which has the edge really.   You are right... Halo has definatlely got that 'extra gear' when you get it in the groove... Quite smply when you switch to planing mode up as well as down wind and it does it early of course.  But it is a big rig, as large as the D1's, (but without the 2nd sail of that craft of course) and while you can sail it very adaquately 'underweight'  you will almost certainly suffer in terms of PN competitiveness.  I love it as a light wind occasional alternative but over about 9-12mph I'm frankly faster with a regular Blaze sail - for me it is like sailing in an extra force of wind ... F2 feels like F3 etc etc.

Come and have another go sometime - either at Burghfield or on the coast.  PM me if you are interested.

Mike L.

If the new Halo setup had been available 18months ago I'd have probably not swapped by Blaze for a Phantom. It seemed like a light wind year in 2012 and the Blaze was just sticky on our puddle.

Mike, do you think there's an optimum size of puddle for a Halo under which it becomes too to get into that extra gear?

If it is suitable for a Blaze it should be fine for Halo as well ...  BTW It does not just have to be for light winds if you are heavy enough anyway any more than for say a D1 ...

I agree with the benefit of hindsight (everyone is gifted with it !) we should have developed the sail originally for standard spars.  Incidentally the revised version also has a revised logo / insignia on it...  Too many people asked 'what is it ?' so now the insignia is based on the word ... 'Halo' just as it does with the much smaller 'Fire; sail option.   Keeps it nice and easy .... and obvious.

Where do you sail ?

perhaps your puddle isn't that small... it's just very far away?

I aail at Foremark reservoir south of Derby. I thought it was a fairly big puddle and have contemplatd an RS100 in the future after reading Clive's comments about how they're not that bad to sail inland. That was until I went on google maps and realised that Frensham "pond" where he sails is anything but a pond and four times the size of Foremark.

Frensham definitely IS a pond (its even called a pond)

Anything much smaller might be termed a puddle ?

I found Frensham pretty big compared to most of the places I've been a member of over the years.
