What do you expect, all the interesting topics have been done and all that is left is the age old PY discussion, just that it appears on various threads rather than on just the one. After all it is the only area that can solicit a discussion/argument, everything else is people tend to agree on.

And there you have it right there. The defining control system. What a great incentive to designers to bring new products to market. Make sure whatever you do, it's not going to beat our Fireball/Merlin/<insert other dross> So the whole sorry, sad, pastime, I'm not even going to call it a sport, suffers the lack of image and goal seeking for the young, the image conscious, the ambitious. The market drivers, to ensure a solid supply of future products. Young man, if you get to be real good we'll let you win our event in some warmed over 50's cockle boat. Well that's just like F1 insisting on still using some 1920's Blower Bentley, oh but you can make some bits in carbon, we're good like that. Don't make us anything new we don't want it. For f**ks Sake. Dozy, Old, Sad, Buffers... There are not enough qualitative expletives to describe you people. No wonder your premier series is sponsored by some lame direct sell insurance outfit, hey that's right up there in the image stakes, real formula 1 stuff - no thanks, not even at my age would my aspirations be set that low. Does anybody even notice these days? Sailjuice? what's that? Antiquated boat racing, don't pay any attention nothing new there, just a bunch of eccentrics seeing how far they can twist some old rules to give each other prizes, they have a system but nobody is allowed to know or understand how it works, folk go there just to see each other really nobody expects anything from it. Sponsors what do they get? Oh they sell insurance anyway so nobody gives a damn about them. Insurance, how dull is that? And you wonder why it's dying as an aspirational activity. Sorry, I am "with winging it" on this one. It's so sad that there isn't a interesting sailing forum anymore. Edited by Blue One - 20 Sep 14 at 10:23am |

However irritating I find GRF and as much bollyocks he talks it at least sparks discussion. The trouble is that most of that discussion is boring and pointless!
Lets face it, you can sail/race what you like depending on preference/income/fitness. There is a system which allows these disparate craft to race against each other...and it works fairly well. Is there any more to say? We all have arguments with our governing body, any sport/hobby does, but is it so bad? No one stops us sailing and if we have a slight problem with an initial handicap does that stop us sailing or racing against our mates? I agree with Nessa, it is getting a bit boring and there are no good jokes in PY discussion.

Are you interested in the D Zero? Or the fact its been nobbled by the association for the preservation of the status quo?
No? Then why don't you go and start a thread about wood treatments for museum pieces? Or you could swap buying a duff outboard motor stories.. People who posts things like 'this is boring' should feel at home in their comfort zone. Edited by iGRF - 20 Sep 14 at 10:52am |

Who was saying I am not. Read what I said, all of the interesting stuff has been and done, whatever else we think may be interesting seems to degenerate into a "discussion" on PY. Here we have one of two new exciting singlehander boats to come to the market and instead of asking about how it sails, how should it be set up, etc, yet again its all about the PY. Exactly the same with the Icon thread. No doubt the same on the Rspeculation one as well if I had read it all. Every single thread seems to come down to PY, that is what I was saying. And yes therefore Nessa was right it is getting boring. However it also seems to be the only thing that gets people talking. I was away for half a day on this and there were 72 posts. 72! And all arguing about the py system and how it is applied. To some it is important, to others it is not. I think it would be easier to accept if everyone agreed to disagree and leave it in a separate thread but the way of this world is that every class that has a thread boils down to its PY. I don't you will ever change it so long as a PY system exists.

The D zero is interesting. At Hunts Jeffers is sailing off the PY recommended by its designer.
Glad you recognise the outboard was duff, shame your mate didn't own up to it. Sailing isn't dying at my club, it's thriving, especially with the youngsters. Perhaps that is something to do with the attitude of the committee driving it, who get on and do things rather than sitting on their backsides and whinging. And while I'm on it you have to have a status quo iGRF. It is called the PY system and it allows varying different classes to race against each other. If you don't have it who the hell are you going to sail against. Pretty boring race on your own. Would your club like 13 (or however many differing classes you have) different starts for all of the different classes there? If you think that there is something better, design it, prove it at your club and then when it is perfect come back to everyone on here and present it to us all. If we agree that you are a genius then present it to and convince the RYA. Oh and if you can't do that please shut up about how rubbish it is, how people gerrymander it suit their agendas and how you are going to sue all and sundry, etc and lets get back to a discussion on the D-Zero I am genuinely interested in the boat, not for me but for many people at my club who may have a more enjoyable sailing experience if they moved into it rather than sticking in Lasers that they don't really enjoy that much

Well I think everyone is agreed that both the D Zero and the Aero are aspirational boats, modern excellent sailing characteristics some interesting features, nice rigs, full carbon, light all you could wish for.
Minor nit picky things that might sway folk one way or the other as with just about very other product in life, but all in all a good thing that pretty much everybody agrees on. So what do 'they' do? The Bufferati, the luddites, the sad folk. Handicap them off the face of existence. If they had been left the way they were, there would be no discussion. |
