I quite like waiting a little while, it kind of makes me think someone is making my order, not steering to me to what they have. Largely psychological, I suspect, but it makes it feel more bespoke. Having said that, I wouldn't want to wait too long.

6 days for my L200 from handing back the keys from the test drive - I don't think I'd be happy waiting 10 weeks to start reaping that tax saving ;-)
Different stocking models for different businesses of course- anyway, my point was I was able to shift my boats to folks who were planning to buy new... The long lead time helped close the deals, and the depreciation wasn't that bad. |

I can tell you right now there is a 9-10 week wait, which seems okay to me. |

 .... It really is like the man says. We often have spare hulls in the pipeline ourselves but unless you want to pay a good premium to have a pile waiting 'just in case' all the time there needs to be an acceptance of reality on both sides.Mike L. |

That would never work for me. I'm rubbish at looking after boats (or anything really) so I'd have to keep it for at least 10 years to amortise all the damage I'd done in the first few weeks of owning it!

And they lose business as a result. Nearly every single person I have sold one of my year/year and half old boats to was going to buy a new one, but the lead-time they've been quoted has enabled me to sell reasonably quickly, usually at a rate of depreciation I have been more than happy with.... the industry loses another 'new boat' sale and the tax man another 20% of whatever that would have cost. Had I have played so fast and loose with cars or high end computing gaming equipment, then I would be a lot worse off for sure!

No-one wants cash tied up in stock, that's why you have to wait.
It's a very low volume market. Cars are different. To be that cheap, they are mass manufactured on a continuous basis. Be interesting to speculate on how much, say, a D-zero would cost if sales were as high as a Ford Focus...... No more than a few hundred pounds I'd guess!

So they are available - at least popular classes are - and I don't expect they are popular because they can be bought off the shelf, I suspect it is the other way round. I'm not surprised it isn't the builders selling them direct, as it rarely is in any other business, and makes sense, especially if the boats are being imported. What I'd hope for the Aero and Dzero is that once the initial orders have been fulfilled, they would be off the shelf too, unless you want it in lilac.
Cars - never tried to buy a new one, as I dent them too often. |
