I've never owned a pair of hikers, as my previous boats have either been ergonomically designed for the driver, or even better have included a nice wire for me to dangle off instead. And clearly I'd never sail anything as hateful as a Laser.
However the back of my 15 is about as comfortable as hiking off a pallet of Toblerone tubes, so I might invest in a pair, and a bit of guidance would be good. Is there any reason why the majority seem to be 3/4 length and flatteringly designed to let your beer gut hang out? TBH I don't think I'll be hiking as enthusiastically as your average Laser sailor, so I was leaning towards the Musto ones that look much more like a full length wetsuit. I also think I could wear them in the winter too, as hopefully I'd be unlikely to get wet sailing a Fred. Or are those Velcro strappy things that just go over whatever kit you are wearing at the time any good? Thoughts people?

There are a few brands that sell long johns that can take hiking pads in them.
The magic marine one even has a zip fly! |

The Neil Pryde hiking shorts are good as you can wear them under a normal wetsuit or a drysuit in winter.

Iain I have a pair of Sandiline XL 3/4 length that Are barely used (and never pis$$ed in). Feel free to pop over one evening next week to borrow them, if you like them then make me an offer and keep them, I won't be needing them anytime soon.

Don't you find Hikers at the top of hills carrying two sticks and wearing bright clothing?

Jimmy K...sounds like a plan. Next week looking a bit mad, but I'd very much like to try before I buy!
Chris...I have a cunning plan, that if I hike as well as use the keel, don't crash into lots of things, don't call "mast abeam" and always ensure that the gin optic is moved up to weather, I might not come last, despite the advancing years (of my boat)... Thanks chaps!

Just as long as you stick with class traditions and run Jamie over, I'm sure that the space/time continuum of DWSC will not be in jeopardy. BTW - I assume she's finished, care to share a pic or two?

They're a bit pricy, but I've loved my Zhik power pads since I bought them. Simply put them under any other kit. Usually wear a cheap pair of Lycra shorts over the top because ripping the @r5e out of your wetsuit may cause offence
