That won't stop people demanding that someone is hung drawn and quartered over it though. Just look at the way that the BBC were panicking about Bertha coming round for tea. There is definitely a culture of blame for anything these days, a whole collective on the look out for something they can stick their noses in.
They won't understand that you cannot predict a squall, someone must be to blame Mind you it must have been one hell of a squall to blow over gp's. Let's hope everyone gets warm soon and doesn't feel the consequences for too long Edited by maxibuddah - 11 Aug 14 at 4:31pm |

We had a similar situation at the inaugural Symmetric Grand Prix. A massive gust came through and flattened half the fleet. It only below for a few minutes but it did cause chaos!

My brother and family are there. Nephew and niece sailing one boat brother and crew in another. All competent sailors. Sister in law has messaged to say everyone is ok.
Thats a relief. Sounds to me like the right think was done and the boats were on their way home when the squall hit. It was rough for the practice race and that was abandoned as well. Hopefully the weather will quieten down and give them some good sailing for the rest of the week. |

That's good Roger, at least all are OK. As is a world championship in guessing that the vast majority or all ofť crews are competent or better.

Hope all including the race and patrol teams come out as it sounds like they will.
Better find all those GP's or there will be ships holed by low floating hulls for miles around, worse than containers similar shape too. |

Nephew was hoping for light winds as they are both a bit light for the boat. He was worried if the wind blew his dad would beat him for the first time

![]() I've sailed some pretty scary championship races (I recall one Ent champs at Exmouth in particular), but never witnessed anything like this. I hope everybody is OK and in a fit state to sail tomorrow.

J24 nationals Poole in the eighties, two boats capsized and sunk at the windward mark bear off,
National 12 Burton Week Tynemouth 1985, finished last in the early teens, with an air sea helicopter on the course, POW Poole 1988 went out to start, eleven boats made the start line, only to be abandoned ... So nothing particularly unusual ...

Just heard from Hugh, he says it was a total surprise to find all the emergency services camped out in the dinghy park when they got in. He says it was windy but copeable.
Apparently a whole bus load of journo`s camped outside. Racing was abandoned after race 1 but Nick and Ellie weighing in at 32 stone wringing wet collected 1st youth prize, second in bronze fleet and 34th overall. gusts to 35mph. I guess from his fb post they still beat their dad. Edited by rogerd - 11 Aug 14 at 7:09pm |
