The weather forecast doesn't suggest anything 'that' severe. GP's are normally pretty good at surviving heavy weather which suggests it must have been a pretty vicious squall. Hopefully with a fleet of mostly (if not all) double bottomed boats the hulls should remain afloat.

...and facebook.

It appears that all are accounted for now.

It seems there are lots of angry people around just waiting for something like this to happen.......then they can be righteously angry. Blame, blame, blame. Must be something to do with the recession.

According to xcweather its around 18-25 mph forecast.  I would imagine most of us wouldn't even think twice about going out in that.

I have sailed in Nationals on the sea in more than that in the past (Scorpion Nationals at Tenby and Sidmouth were both windy events. mean speeds recorded on the committee boat around 20kts on at least 1 day for each).

Storm in a teacup.

In all seriousness it looks like the organisers have acted properly and promptly in realising they were overwhelmed and bringing the coastguard in to assist. As the squall was not forecast it took everyone by surprise (how you forecast a squall is anyones guess, I would say only a local weather radar would give any hint but I am no meteorologist).

Good to hear that all are accounted for (and that checks are ongoing just to be sure). I would imagine there are quite a few boats to recover too.

(oh and I wont mention the Fireball nats at Porthpean with the immortal quote from a local 'you will be fine as long as it doesn't blow a F5-6 from the south east'...)
