Smashed my 8ft long carbon spinny pole on sunday (ill advised attempt to overtake someone on the inside whilst heading deep down wind in a gusty F5!)
Not at all sure why (or how) it snapped where it did (ie NOT around the forestay) but now have to get a new one.
Selden claim their poles are 39mm Outside diameter (and appear to have an extra diagonal wrap around them)..P&B also do a pole that appears to have an outer wrap.
My now dead pole measures and looks like 2.5m of Carbonology standard tooob, which is uni-directional carbon with a bit of circumferential glass wrap in the layup and only 1.4mm thick instead of the 2mm Selden imply (35mm inside 39mm outside).
Anyone got experience of stock tubing for use as a spinny pole? Is it worth the extra (money and wait) for a proper Selden or P&B pole? Or is Carbon just a waste of money anyway? Ally poles are about £60 and I never heard of one breaking.

If you want a carbon pole, I can make you one. You can spec it too if you would like?

With carbon pole, you have several crucial variables:
Fibre used Resin used Layup Curing process Wall thickness All of these have significant effects on the stiffness and strength of the pole. |

Thanks for the offer Stevie; if you PM me the price (or dare to publish here) I'll consider it if (when) the carbonology tube I just ordered snaps!
2.46m long, 35mm internal diameter, 37.8mm external diameter - though 39mm - 40mm might be better. Carbonology stock 2.5m tube = £99.24, P&B plain unfitted tube = £175, Selden pole (complete?) = £298, SuperSpars pole (complete?) = £498 !!!!!!!!! all making £60 for a bombproof ally one seem a good idea. The first Javelin I sailed had a Superspars carbon one .... it snapped, we replaced with ally, it's still going strong.

So, we got a 2nd hand bombproof ally one and found why carbon is so good - not the weight on the boat but the weight on the pole launching kit and return elastic.
Bought a stock carbon tube from Carbonology and wrapped the two ends in unidirectional carbon at 90o to the length (for more burst proofness around the fittings) and it's been fine so far. Survived F7 at the Javelin Euros, so pretty satisfied.

Ever thought of using the top (or bottom) half of a windsurfer mast? They seem better value for money than what you lot get charged for 'carbon'
