I'd Echo the comments of Bootscooter and Slooow, it did really feel like a top event but with a chilled, relaxed and very sociable atmosphere that gave great racing and quality socials off the water, very well organised by the class committee and the host club Brightlingsea SC.
Great to meet up with Boots for the first time and great to see so many faces from previous classes that have now come to join the D-Ones, there really is a feeling now that the quality of this boat both in construction, design and handling is being recognised and good steady growth will continue. One thing that really stood out for me was the service offered by the guys from Devoti, Martin and his colleague (can't remember his name) were invaluable throughout the event, offering help and guidance, carrying out upgrades to some boats and a couple of repairs after windy races, they worked long and hard without any complaints or moaning and are real professionals looking after the class, service was second to none. |

Thank you for that, he'll be stoked! He loved the boat, the racing and the socials. Couldn't stop going on about how weird it was to be reading about Nick and his victories and awards in the press, then to be having a pint (ahem, coke) with him and others. Great experience. ![]() |

So, after all the recent hype the RS100s got (just!) more boats at their Nationals than the D-Ones did at their Europeans...

To be fair, this was effectively a Nationals with 28 UK boats I believe. In terms of boats sold to turn out I suspect thats quite an impressive ratio.

Fair point, I was looking at the entries. I guess sunny Brightlingsea wasn't enough for some people..

Yes, was hyped up to be Europeans. But sadly i believe other factors came into play (Something to do with ITA fleet), so was British nationals. Not sure on the full facts as i have been somewhat removed from the class over the last 6 months. But could find out.
Not sure its hype Jim, the class is growing in an Organic fashion. No stupid marketing campaigns, but word of mouth, people sailing the boat and seeing it on the water. Not sure how a new class can win with comments like that. Either they have a big marketing push (ala 100's) and sell loads of boats only then to find a 4 year drop off, or they start slowly and build sure footings, seeing organic growth and hopefully a bit of stability. To very different sides of how to build a class. Dont get me wrong, i am sure Devoti would of bitten their arm off for initial sales performance like RS, just fantastic how they can drum up a snowball order bank from a standing start. The D1 was forced into its current position and actually from a class perspective its good business. What i find most interesting is the nationals attendance graphs, you can almost see history repeating itself with 700 Vs. Musto. Just 10 years on! New boat sails are healthy (Think another 4 have been sold in the last month alone in the UK) Used boat stock is now very thin on the ground.

I think Jim is referring to the comments regularly made on here that the RS100 is a dead duck and that the D1 is the Next Big Thing not being borne out by the reality of what is on the water, rather than suggesting that the D1 is failing.
In a way it IS similar to the Musto v's 700 thing - where apart from a spike for the Mustos a few years ago, numbers aren't that different, but if you took what has been on here at face value, the RS boat isn't being sailed by anyone at all and none are being built etc etc. |

Apart from the fact that something like 25 RS700s were built last year.

Precisely - and how many Mustos? Again, I love the way the Musto class works, and I think the boat looks wonderful, it is the 700 bashing that used (?) to happen on here a lot that I found odd. It is a little like Indie Rock fans bashing big label acts, I guess. |
