All these D Zeros being ordered is impressive. However there have been almost 30 Supernova's built in the last 12 months, there where 18 boats at Combs on Saturday and 28 at Carsington on Sunday. At present there are 56 pre-entries for the Nationals at Aberdovey.....(where?).
Both events this weekend where won by an 18 year old and at Combs there where 5 helms under 30. Somehow on this forum Supernova slip below the radar but surely they will share market space with D Zero? Supernova sailors really like their boats unlike Laser sailors who seem to say, "Yes but......". |

The Supernova is a cracking boat, and the new ones are very impressive to look at.
I know a few folks who have had 'soft issues' with the Supernova- not getting on with others in the class, or finding problems with Hartleys etc. Not that that would bother me too much- tend take folks & boats as I find them rather than rely too much on other people's opinion. 50+ boats at any nationals is good going... any new class would be v. lucky to get half of that, the D-Zero included.

Having recently tried a Supernova I don't think the target market is the same. I found the Supernova a bit impersonal to sail. Combine that with very heavy sheet loading and I don't think it is the boat for everyone. Certainly not for me anyway. I did manage to place it second in a handicap race on a course that would not favour the boat (lots of runs) so it does seem to perform but just didn't float my boat.

Most people who get into a Supernova do so from somewhere like a laser and initialy struggle upwind. It takes a few weeks to suss what makes it go, but then its really brilliant and noticeably faster upwind and reaching, but similar downwind to the Laser. Power control is very adjustable with the forestay control, but the boat needs to be kept very flat. Hartleys were great to deal with for me. Only criticism were foils were not the best, but hopefully they have sorted that. I found it a friendly class, so no complaints there.

The Supernova has probably done a good job at picking up all those who have grown dissatisfied with the Laser for what ever reason ... and what other options were there ???
Now the D-0 is on the scene I think that will impact the Supernova ...

Never having sailed a Supernova I can't comment, the only one I heard at the weekend was that the D-0 was much easier to tack, is that likely?

I used to race against a Supernova regularly and have done the odd race in one myself before my pal swapped it for a Phantom and now the other guy has swapped his for a Streaker.
The time I raced it was a while back and tbh I found it a bit boring, not much to do so to speak, but then I was a bit younger and fitter, I can't imagine why anyone would force it onto kids, they should ring childline, its tantamount to abuse. But as an alternate to the Solo, the new one with it's wash through hull you would think would be an obviously superior choice, but the sail is fixed isn't it? So you have no option but to use the one it comes with and I gather it can be a bit of a handful in an irons inducing manner, not experienced it myself but then I've never sailed one in much of a breeze. It's a nice looking hull shape though, somebody told me once it's a cut down five oh, then again someone told me the Blaze was a cut down I14, there's lots of myth in the boat park. |

In my opinion the D-0 is easier because you don't have to worry about the fully battened sail popping over and giving you a big load of power at the wrong moment (if you are a little out on your timing). I believe the original Blaze rig had this problem, especially when the wind got up so they changed the rig to a semi-soft.
