There is a downside of stays on a boat like this. if gybing in a breeze its almost always the main that puts you in and not the kite. On the 100 if it was howling you didn't have far to go as the stays limit mast rotation. In the d-one, the final get out of jail is to dump the main and it flys off as there is no stay to hit,. Not saying its pretty, but can stop a swim. I know that it shouldn't come to that etc etc, but sometimes it just does...

So why do you think the nationals attendance has been in decline since it's early peak in 2011?

Hi Simon

Understand your point of course - We have a slightly different approach in marginal high wind conditons .. and we do feel the Blaze batten system helps considerably (though maybe not the fully battened Halo one !).  Heading for a 'squeeky' gybe we dump a handful of kicker and the roach massively opens up - even inverting the few reamining full length battens up high if in blasting conditons and they almost head off in front of the mast.  You gybe and it feels almost underpowered and then slam the kicker back on.  Our belief is that  the semi-soft batten arrangement  means the sail can lose a hell of a lot of power when needed.  Far from pretty as well but there are few 'style' awards for critical transitions !

Anyway  ... I'm going to stay off the 100 thread now.  When we have a bit more to talk about and in time photos of the 'XS' concept we'll be back elsewhere.

Good question....I suspect there are loads of factors, not least that most turnouts that involve travelling are suffering. Not sure the venue is all that popular with the demographic. Is singlehanding asymmetric sailing as popular as everyone expected - you could analyse it until the cows come home really, and I don't have answers to the big picture.

Every club/class is struggling to balance the numbers coming into racing against those leaving for whatever reason (and cycling or old age seem the biggest culprits around here) - at HISC we are working hard to help people transition from "I sail, but not sure about regular racing" to "hey that was great, when's the next race". Of course simple singlehanders are the most attainable - Lasers. Solos, Aeros etc. The RS100 and D-One compete for the competent sailors which as a group appear to be diminishing slightly in activity if not numbers. We introduced something called Get Racing Club which is really working and a note that Draycote appear to have adopted the same package!!

well from your (former) POV, they need to do something mate, the handicap fleet for potential Aero (and D-Zero) customers has turned out about 2 entries per week in the wednesday night series.

For balanced opinion- the Laser fleet has never been stronger and the Solos are doing fine too, so I guess it's just the old class racing vs handicap in 'something better' thing.

That is an interesting analysis ... is sailing coming under pressure as society becomes more time poor?

I still think the 100 is one of the better boats I have owned. The people who bought it and sold it because they "didn't like it" were the ones who weren't good enough to sail it properly. The only comment that Nick has made which I disagree with is the one about the choice of rigs. I was 82kg and 6ft'3 and went with the 8.4, partly because I could only really justify the cost of one sail. RS kept trying to push me up a rig size but I stuck with it and ordered an 8.4. I could see exactly this happening.

The only reason I am glad that I don't have my 100 anymore is the huge drop in price of the second hand boats. In fact, it isn't even that huge really. I just happened to get out at exactly the right time and sold my boat for a figure nearly double what the cheaper boats are going for now.

It's a good boat, a really good boat.

A highly contestable statement - some of those who sold beat you quite convincingly at Parkstone iirc. People sold on for many reasons, people disliked it for many reasons too. If reasonable level club ssilors were selling from lack of skill, then the class really needed to address some training issues. It was supposed to be fun afterall

When I did some training in one, everyone else liked the boat more than the Vareo. While I was good enough to sail it, I preferred the feel of the older design. For me, a lightened Vareo with a semi soft mainsail and a flatter kite (this last has been done, I think) would have been my preferred boat, rather than the more powerful 100.

However, back on small water, I can see the Vareos strugging to use the extra sail effectively, and my decision to sail an unarigged boat looks like the right one for me.
