still i fail to see why it would have got a race at MMs club when it was just a one-off whereas my laser wouldnt have even got the chance to sink. i suppose if you go the the effort of making a whole boat its a bit different to modding a boat, but they are still both one -offs requiring one off PYs so the admin burden is the same.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.  Producing a new boat like the Punk is a serious, and pretty rare thing, so we would shoulder the extra admin.  Every Tom, Dick & Harry making a carbon daggerboard here and topmast there would involve a whole lot more work.  It's all a matter of degree.

I appreciate that I'm coming across as all negative here, mostly because I do give up a few hours a week to processing results, and faffing, thankless work it is too.  But I've also been in the other camp when we launched the V3000, and even now I'd love to put a carbon rig on the V3k - I think it is a finishing touch that would really enhance the boat.

In my position I'd probably be allowed to do it, since I'd be shouldering part of the extra burden of admin, but I'd have to say goodbye to fair racing.  My clubmates would demand an initial PY adjustment much greater than what I'd consider to be the likely benefit, so I'd be swapping racing for the sailing quality.  Even when things settled down, I really would be on a personal PY - not my ideal way to go racing.

As the man in charge of sailing where Nipper sails I can vouch for any changes to his boat would be accepted especially a gag for his language when he rolls his laser in
We would have worked out a way to work with Dan on his Punk no problem say same handicap as a laser at first and now once we had realised the facts about him and his boat same as a Phantom.

That would  be a jaundiced judgement of a matter of pragmatic reality.  Offer to start doing your local results processing and I'm sure you too can become a mate too, not just someone who wants his own way even if it inconveniences others.

As he sails a laser does he have any class rules to stick to.
is it now a Torch? or a rooster one design. As my later comment about the punk said we would try and work out any changes made and adjust accordingly if relevant. cutting off the corners virtually no change as he's been sailing the boat long enough. rudder etc would have to be monitered

Interesting point.  An expert would derive almost no benefit from removing the sheet/snagging corners, whereas a beginner might save minutes in a race through capsizes.  Tricky...

One of the things I have just realised about sailing is that it is a "very bossy sport". I didn't realise it before but I now resent being told by officious individuals that I have to do… this or that.

There may be an element of that in places, but I think in terms of this thread that's a totally unfair comment.

If you just want to go for a sail, then fine - sail what you want and no one is going to have anything to say about it. But if you want to race with people then it's no great surprise if the people you want to race with expect you to race with them on reasonably equal terms. I'm no great fan of PY racing, I'll always compete against boats in my class - even in a handicap race I don't have much interest in how I do against other classes. Making changes to a class so it's no longer in class is a great thing to do if you just want to have fun, and see what you can do - but you can't expect people you want to race against to welcome you into their fleet. It's not being bossy or unreasonable, it's just trying to make sure that the racing remains fun for everyone else too.

who said i sailed a laser.

so here's an option:
i cut the corner off a laser i dont have (or other betterer things) and sail on a PY of my choosing (no admin burden) but i only get scored hors concours, ie the results show where i would have come but dont affect others scores nor affect series results, nor can i win the series. (no extra admin burden as i have paid my dues as per everyone else and do my duties)
I get to sail something i want, everybody else gets to sail their badly designed boats them without worrying that i may be being a bandit.

I get a score i feel is fair.
