Following on from the other thread on safety knives, I am interested to know how many people carry them and what class of boat you sail.  For reference I never did in a singlehander (laser) but do as helm in a Fireball.
What could possibly go wrong?

When I'm instructing there is always one in my BA pocket, when I'm in the contender I have one of those little magic marine knives clipped to a Gill Compressor vest. 

I once 'tied' my leg to the side of the contender with the mainsheet - I was in the water.  I thought about cutting myself free then decided I might well sever the femoral artery in doing so, so just untied it as quickly as I could.  Highest heart rate ever I think.

I have this little knife from Opinel which has a shackle key and a whistle in it.  I snapped the tip off so it is blunt.  This goes in the BA for other boats.

I have a knife with me when teaching, and usually when racing, though it is one that takes 2 hands to open, so not good if I'm personally trapped (unlikely in a small singlehander). When minding lots of inexperienced sailors, makes sense to have a way of freeing people. What it does have is a serrated edge.

Always carried a knife when sailing with the kids.
 
Never needed to use it thankfully - the threat was enough to make them behave ;-)

Never carried one until I started sailing regularly on the salty, lumpy stuff, although the nearest I came to entrapment was on that big puddle near Huntingdon.

When I thought I was going to be sailing a high performance twin wire boat with my 12 year old I did think of putting one of these on me or the boat though: http://www.spareair.com/product/models.html
possibly seems excessive but I did think about it. Unfortunately that sailing experience didn't last long.
