Why is it every safety knife I've ever come across is useless when you come to use it? Answer - they are made of crap materials & despite being sold as stainless bladed blah blah etc.... they rust like buggery & if held in a scabbard get stuck!! We got a couple of Teckno jobs for our safety boats & they are pants!!! Yes, I know its part of the routine to check safety boat stuff is up to scratch, but you'd think the materials used to make something would be up to the job it's designed for....

If you can afford one, I'd recommend those Boye Boat knives, gutted I've lost mine again, probably in a capsize, they do stay sharp..

Sometimes wondered if it's possible to dip safety boat knives in wax, and still have them fit in the scabbard.
Gucci answer would be a diver's blunt tip titanium knife.  |

Paradoxically, I've heard that stainless steel can rust if deprived of oxygen (sounds crazy, but something to do with a protective surface layer), so watertight scabbards might be a problem.

With the Tekno safety knife I've mentioned, adverts state: The highest grade stainless steel, coated with teflon to ensure long life- even when used in salt water!
This is absolute cobblers as a simple magnet test indicates a lot of normal steel in it...& oh yes, it's painted black....

It is wrong to think that magnetic stainless steel is not magnetic. Whether it is magnetic depends on how much the ss has been worked. Classic example is a stainless sink where the bowl may be magnetic and the drainer not.

I believe that is crevice or pitting corrosion, which is a different form of corrosion to rust (which needs oxygen). |

This looks the business. Titanium, would strap on to a bouyancy aid. Pricey, but could be the cheapest knife you ever buy!

Think you will find that grade of ss used for knives is magnetic and that grade is needed to hold a sharp edge , unfortunately can rust a bit too , mate of mine introduced me to a spray used by motorcyclists to proof bare metal , he used it on his knife carried on bouyancy aid and it kept it in good condition , i tried too and it does job , just cant remember name ,
