Just to put the record straight, Charlie Cumbley (North Sails OD) personally changed the battens on the two Icons at our Hayling Island premises in January 2013. They were changed to a revised specification as agreed between North Sails and Cirrus Boats. We ensured that all Icon rigs either supplied by Devoti or Suntouched direct were updated accordingly.
We will, happily, help with the popping issue when we do the D-Zero test day at Hunts on 24th May. It does seem strange as I have not had an issue with this when sailing the Icon, even in very light winds. |

A Classics meet... Not that any of the visits would object, I'd imagine. |

Rodney, we had the batten popping problem on 7, but it just became second nature to flick the cunningham after a tack ..... it was much smoother that banging the boom about. I didn't see it as a problem. so ..... tack, one pump of the boom with the gybing strop then flick the cunningham job done!

Yes indeed, I listed that event on this website because I am the organiser of that event, which as Rupert points out, is a CVRDA meeting. Unfortunately the iCon doesn't qualify.

Battens - if they are not 'switching' over best to check - physically checking again if needed. If they are not going across easily and without fuss then something is not right. I'll check the specification references so you can check the battens stiffness directly yourself - it will be marked on each one. I've asked Charlie C. this afternoon for confirmation and 'numbers'.
We have never had a problem at Cirrus even with the earliest North production sails - the specification has not been changed by anyone, least of all us, but a few slightly varied sets apparently got out there and a batten problem was reported to us and North. In the short term it might also be worth saying that Icon regulars run the rig with a bit more kicker than you might expect. The luff is cut for this and the sail can appear relatively flat - don't just wind it on now but do try adjusting kicker to see if this makes a useful difference. I'm sure Devoti experience will confirm this point as well now. Mike L. |

Hi ... The batten specification is below. Might still be kicker / Cunningham / tension but it costs nothing to check either !
760mmE10140c Top1 964mmE10160c 2 1366mmE10180c 3 1000mmE10140f 4 1000mmE10160f 5 Hope this helps - let us know. Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 28 Apr 14 at 4:53pm |

Hmm, well thanks, but I think that I'm going to take Rodney's word that they are the right ones rather than hobbling over on my crutches to check.

If I remember I will take a peek when I am next at the club... One thing I did notice at the weekend was that if you 'occidentally' let the outhaul off it is impossible to get any back on whilst sailing...A minor inconvenience on a small pit such at Hunts....

Please don't Paul. If Rodney says they are the tight battens then I am sure they are. If Charlie has set them up then they should Aldo be still the right tension and I would rather they stayed that way!
