No, I have assumed they are correct and fitted an empirical equation that matches reasonably well. What struck me was the simplicity of it. The Europe and Pico/topper struck me too. It could be useful for new classes like the Aero and Zero, because the RYA won't make a guess on a number and the builders will not be trusted whatever number they suggest. |

Graph would be more readable sorted in handicap order L to R and with a baseline in the 700 region.
I guess I'm not altogether surprised one can get to a reasonable approximation with a simple formula, but a nice piece of work doing it. I'm not sure I'd know how to start: I'm impressed. I understand NHC uses a formula in the same sort of manner to make its base list calculation. And yes, I can imagine a simple empirical formula to get trial numbers in the right sort of area being useful to clubs. Edited by JimC - 22 Apr 14 at 7:30pm |

OK, so, I need to know how you''re inputing the data, length in mtrs? sail area sq mtrs?, what crew weight did you use for your chart? Or did you just run with given all up weight or hull weight.
I'm also doubting it if you're using the data as it currently stands, (Looking at my 4 favourite wrong uns, Blaze Phantom, Laser, EPS. and the Streaker/ Solo anomaly. Edited by iGRF - 22 Apr 14 at 8:17pm |

Length in metres, area in square metres and weight in kg, for all up weight including crew. I split boats into needing big, average, small or v small crew at 95, 80, 65 and50kg respectively.
Getting good data is tricky, for example it isn't always clear whether boat weight is just the hull or the whole thing. If anyone has any data, I'll gladly run the numbers. With better and more data, the 144, 37 and 1.2 coefficients will change for the better too. Now I know what I'm doing, the formula can be calculated in the blink of an eye - I just need lots of good data! |

How are you expressing the lengths? i.e. three mtrs ninety = 3900? or 390? 9.5sq mtr, 9.50 or 9500, I can't make it work, it's returning a negative and varying the weight according to the assumed helm size? Er...

Try values of length = 4.2, area = 8.5 and weight = 145
That should give you a PY around 1050. 1800 - (144 x 4.2) - (37 x 8.5) + (1.2 x 145) = 1050 Basically for a Finn the crew is 95kg, for a Laser 80kg, a Radial 65kg, topper 50kg. It's just a typical weight, not tailored PYs for individuals! |

I got reasonable answers with metres (and decimals), square metres and kg respectively. For my PlusPlus I entered 4.27 12.5 170 and got 926.62, which was pretty close to my original estimate. Edited by JimC - 22 Apr 14 at 8:58pm |

OK so you're kind of solving the RM equation by weight designation which does effectively the same thing, so that sort of works. (I had all sorts of complications with weight height etc and Kiss has to be the answer since all we're looking for is an equation that can be applied equally to all in the sure knowledge it'll be wrong, but at least wrong for everyone in equal measure, which is kind of my point in all this manoeuvring of some classes but not others due to lack of data.
So how soon can we get the SBHRS website up and running.. ![]() |
