I'm simply trying to make the point that stats can be made to work anyway you like. I think the Icon is probably too low, but not enough too low to worry about, and what a compliment to the current sailors!

But to answer the specific question, the Phantom is known to be great in light winds and the Blaze when the breeze is on. They are also kite less hikers. So they seem like good benchmarks in many ways.

And yes they are, they also perfectly illustrated the way the Yardstick used to work, even though it was wrong at times, it was also right depending on the weather. My pal and i used to gave great times battling it out, he was better in strong winds in a boat that's strengths favoured lighter weather, I'm a better light weather helm in a boat that favoured stronger winds , in their conditions they were/are both bandits, but they were equally matched, but now the one is 1002, and the other is whatever it is 1036, yet they used to be within a point of each other.

Now no physical change has occurred to either of them, all that has happened is skewed data from malgorythmns and bufferdom plus a bit of the green eye at one particular boat, perfectly illustrating the screw up that is currently occurring.

Last year there was an Icon sailing at our coastal club, and according to calculations it was often sailing quicker than the 969 EN.

I don't know if it is an accurate as for some reason when I look at a boat sailing along for I struggle to estimate it's performance to within a few percent.
If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Are you so certain that your helming ability was so absolutely similar that the handicaps were right? Judging speed on a sample of 2 - way to go.

Im happy to test an Icon on a challenging tidal estuary and prove the EN is about right.

I note that Jon Hessig sailed one at Rock a few years ago and demolished the fleet. Cant remember the PY he used but thats not really the point.

I really think that you just need to get out on the water and enjoy the racing, and dont get so hung up on it all. Treat it as a personal challenge to close gaps on others rather than the final position. Enjoy the camaradarie and the social scene, and stop moaning.
