And the clubs are full of what? Members, members who have just had their key asset devalued by the 'experimental' actions of this bloody PYAG.

So here, right now as Commodore of one of those so called clubs you are providing a service for, with all due respect, you are not doing a very good job, certainly not for us coastal clubs, bring your very best down here put them in an Icon and our Merlin sailors will run rings round them, the very moment they raise their kite.

Honestly 1020 - 1010 - reasonable, 1020 - 1000 even, harsh but could be explained, 1020 to 969 smacks of a vendetta. I wonder, has anybody on that committee even looked at an Icon, never mind raced against one.

Here anyone remember this, three icons raced against quite a few of us many of whom were quite well matched helms and across light to medium winds, inland, I didn't notice Icons having it away at 1020..

The only real time I've raced against an Icon was at the Datchet Flyer last year. We started together in the Sunday pursuit race and the leading Icon and I were never separated by more than a few boatlengths for the whole race. The Icon was a little faster upwind, the 300 a bit quicker downwind.

I appreciate this was one-off, on a large bit of water and in a reasonable breeze (force 3-4). I can only guess that some people are sailing Icons very fast on some more restricted pieces of water.

that's the nub of it, how many of the results going in to the EN are from Mike sailing at Burghfield?  I don't know... but it strikes me he could well have shot himself in the foot on this one.  He'd have been better off lending one to Grumpf, assuming of course Hythe and Saltwood returns its data.  Wink

Did you see who penned the previous post Tom?  Wink

In all fairness (and having seen the Icon race) yes it did come through the fleet pretty quickly but it got as far as me (in a Laser) and then didn't progress any further. Yes it is quick, but as quick as a Fireball or a Contender I think not!

I would say for now (as I seem to recall it is a EN) that clubs need to tweak this number and see what results they get. Seems that 1020 might be a good starting point....

If you take a boat and add 12% more sail, about 4% more waterline length and about 40 years of design progress, how much speed do you expect to add?

It's interesting to see Jeffers' statement that the Icon should not be expected to play with 'Balls or Contenders. In Oz the Tasar is on the same yardstick as the Contenders, which rate below the 'Ball, but the Tasars seem to do quite well against both of them.

depends on the design brief.... I don't get the vibe that top-speed wasn't the primary goal.  Ease of use and nice boat to sail was... which from looking at it, it seems to do well.  I certainly came away from racing against three of them thinking it was a 'good boat'... whatever that's worth anyway.

under different circumstances, Steve's post above basically saying it's around the same speed as a 300, would by my reckoning, be a very positive contribution.  '300 speed' is in my opinion the perfect club racing speed for dinghies, especially inland... fast enough to enjoy it, slow enough to deliver good quality racing.

Yes but Steve's speed in a 300 will definitly be much quicker than the PY, maybe 50 pts?!?

To be fair Chris on the lake I sail on a Fireball does not stand a chance usually unless the sailor is top notch and the course and wind is perfect (same is true of the Contender). It is however great fun (which is kind of the point).

About 2.5% for the water line alone.    If the  Tasar PY is 1018 that would make the Icon around 990.

Add more sail area and 40 years of design improvements, who knows but maybe another 1.5% putting the Icon at 975, so, not a bus ride away from the EN.
